Only smart thing he has done in past year and half. He would have gotten boo'd out of the arean and overshadowed Knight.

OSU loses those practices; that's part of the punishment.
I wasn't sure, but it does make sense that they're not allowed to practice.

This should of came out months ago though. Wonder if Meyer would of came and if he would of gotten these recruits in the last couple weeks?
I think they'll be fine next year, and even though he was hoping it wouldn't happen, I've gotta' believe a smart guy like Urban Meyer was aware that this may happen. So, to answer your question, YES he still would've taken the job, and whether or not all of the recruits that have verballed recently would still have come, I guess we'll find out over the next few weeks. It's not the best scenario, but still, it's only a bowl ban for one season.

No doubt in my mind Meyer would've still accepted, though it may have cost OSU a little more money. Also, with the recruits, I would imagine most would give up a bowl chance their first year for the opportunity to make a run at NCG's their last 3 years.

This.
If Gene smith gets fired, it should be because of this. I'm not sure anybody could have damaged us worse. He spent over $1million of school money on self investigation and self incrimination....gave the NCAA all the rope it needed. Compare and contrast to Auburn and Tennesee's "insufficient evidence".
He said in his statement after the penalties were handed down that he wanted to make the university a 'best in class' model of compliance....news flash! ...We already were! Nobody could have complied any better....right up to the point where you bent over like a rape victim who wouldn't resist.
What you needed to do Gene, was to stick up for your 'clean' players and appeal so that they could play in a bowl game next year.

Maybe it is better for him that the University move forward from this....but I'd be pretty sure that feeling is not universal. I have to wonder whose sidehe was on? He threw a lot of people under the bus trying to be a 'model of compliance.'

Basically, for $9000 worth of improper benefits( some of that is in dispute with Devier Posey) the cost of the 'self' investigation exceeded $1.2 million dollars, cost $400,000 in forfeited money. Vacated 2010 season wins plus 2011 another lost season.... A good coach lost his job...a kid was run out of school...another kid lost almost a full season of eligibility for pocket change....and now even another season is to be 'lost'. I think(as I've stated on here over and over) the NCAA is out of control, inconsistent and exceeds it's authority.... and GENE! I think you've done enough for the University.

THe "free education" isnt what they are there for and you know it.
It doesn't matter what a kids motivation is. He puts in his time, effort, work...he deserves to play. If he screws up, the penalty should be levied at him and him alone...but most of all it should be fair and reasonable and commensurate with the violation.

I agree with everyone else in that these circumstances have basically given every institution the incentive to never self-report ever again.

OSU ddint win games bacause of tats.
Isn't it reasonable to say that the unfair advantage OSU gained was having 5 star players on the field all year long instead of having them sit the first four games of the year like they should have had the violation been reported when it occurred?

You're right, OSU didn't win because of tats. They won because JT did not report anything, and players who had committed violations and should have been standing in street clothes on the sidelines were playing in the game.

Seems to me, by your standards, the NCAA did it's job.

so players should be allowed to receive as much money as they want/can get? Good logic.

It gives a potential advantage in recruiting and performance incentives.

+1

The only thing that pisses me off about the rulings was how fucking long it took the NCAA. What a joke.

The scholarship issue isn't that big of a deal. I believe OSU only used 79 of it's available 85 scholarships this season anyway.

The bowl ban doesn't affect this years recruiting class much, and it definitely has no bearings on next seasons.

You just have to look as far as the SEC to see how giving benefits to players can turn into a competitive advantage.

Oh, balderdash! Nobody said they should not receive penalties for violating a rule....but it should be commensurate with the crime. For the 'pocket change' amounts that were considered improper, the players should have had to repay the money or donate it to a charity and serve a couple of game suspension at the most. Pryor, because of the depth of his involvement, nailed for more. But these penalties imposed by the NCAA are way over the top. Anybody who compares this to USC which involved 35X the amount should never run for for judge.

So SMU and the U ever facing any repercussions in the 80s is complete bullshit?

I say SMU too because you can argue that since the players haven't seen the field yet as recruits that it's not a direct competition advantage at that time.

People on twitter were pissed that OSU got off "easier" than USC.

People who have that logic are ignorant. Not only did USC have a HUGE violation regarding Reggie Bush, but their basketball program was hit as well.

Again...the penalties aren't so much for the initial transgression. They are for the cover up. People who are saying that these penalties are because of tattoos are just mistaken. Those penalties were served when the players sat out the first five games of the year.

And OSU was still with in the 5 year window of the basketball sanctions. Smith said it himself, the part that he didn't take into account was the repeat violator status.

No surprise that Ohio State is Sportscenter's opening story, but I love how the try to make it sound like Urban Meyer's future at OSU is in doubt in their opening.

"What does it mean for the future of Urban Meyer at Ohio State?" Somethings just never change.
