By the question I have for all of you is why are you putting all the brunt on Gates?

At the risk of being politically incorrect and brutally blunt, he's the biggest, blackest, baddest looking dude in the video, and on almost all of the newsclips the last image you see is Gates standing in a thuglike boxers pose looking like he's just itching to kick somebody's ass. JMO.

I actually agree with you. If Gates were a 5'11, 165 pound point guard instead of a physcially intimdating 6'9 260 pound muscle bound power forward people would not be saying boo.

By the question I have for all of you is why are you putting all the brunt on Gates? He wasn't the only one who threw a punch. Ini fact, there is video showing Xavier players throwing punches at UC coaches. Is Gates being punished because he just happened to land the "best" punch?

I know some will argue Gates' punch was a "sucker punch". But was it? Frease came running into a scrum pushing people around. From other angles, it does not to be appear as cheap as it did on first blush.

Lyons threw just as many punches only he stinks at landing them and he received only 2 games. smh

Sorry, but anyone defending Gates is an idiot.

He escalated the situation, that is alone enough to warrant a season long suspension.

Also, when was the last time a white person got into a fist fight and wasn't called a thug? White people just get into less fights, period.

(I honestly can't even remember the last white person to throw a punch).

Under-educated black males doing what under-educated black males do..... act violently. If you recruit ignorant thugs you can't act outraged when they act like an ignorant thug. It would be like having a skunk for a pet and being shocked when it sprayed you, it's what they do.

My post was directed more towards UC, but Lyons sounds like a wannabe tough guy.

Just because a bunch of white guys on the internet don't like when the race card is played, doesn't mean there aren't racial issues going on here. Every word that is spouted off about Lyons and Holloway has racial undertones. You don't like that they called themselves "gangstas"? Well that's because in your (most likely) white mind, gangsta=gang member, criminal. Well that isn't necessarily what it means to a 21 year old black kid. If you can't understand that, then you fail to understand perspective. Us white sports fans have no problem recruiting the black kids from the hood, we just don't want them to act like it or talk like it. When you hear Robert Griffin III talk you think "Man, he is a very well spoken young man." which is I'm-not-racist-speak for "he sounds white". Now no one is going to claim that calling yourselves gangstas and saying you "zipped em up" is a good idea or makes you sound smart. These young men need to understand where they go to school and who their audience is. They said some stuff in the heat of the moment that they were probably saying to each other immediately after the fight in the locker room. But what you say to each other is not what you say to the media.

That being said, the fact that the attention has been focused on what was SAID rather than what was DONE is ridiculous. And the fact that Holloway is being blamed after "starting it" with his trash talk is naive. As if trash talking doesn't go on in every game across the country without people losing their cool and resorting to violence, especially in a heated rivalry game. This isn't a UC did everything Xavier did nothing post either. The Xavier players that threw punches should be treated the same as the UC players that threw punches. But honestly, lets quit with the pseudo-outrage over the Xavier press conference. Are we really that shocked? The media that loves trash-talking and uses violent metaphors all the time to describe sporting events is suddenly outraged when some players do it? Get over it.

No there isn't. Don't like the moniker "thug" being associated with black people, then don't start fights on national TV. Race is only being played as an excuse and it only further hurts black people when they play it. No one brought race into it until some black people want to claim things are unfair because of their race. Get over it.

Please, educate me--what exactly does "gangsta" mean to a 21 year old black kid? When I hear gangster, I think of Goodfella's, Al Capone, etc. When I hear gangsta, I think of gangs, rappers (of which most are black), etc.

Please enlighten me so I won't make this mistake again.

Not so much a race thing, as a culture thing. The writers (old white guys) have no idea what kind of language these kids use in their day to day lives. And if they do, they're completely ignoring it or holding the players to a different standard when they speak to the media. Which is fine. But lets not make it ok to use violent metaphors in your writing but then act outraged because the Xavier players said "zip em up". Its awfully hypocritical. Or just come out and say what you mean which is "Hey, do you guys mind talking more white when there's a microphone in your face?"

LOL yeah, I'm so wrong, I bet black 21 year old totally think of Al Capone when they say gangsta. So what Tu meant was that they have a bunch of bootleggers on the team. They make lots of booze illegally and then sell it for profit. Oh and they also don't pay taxes.

Gangsta is an attitude, someone tough that defends their turf and doesn't take any shit from anyone. White dudes might call this a badass, or a tough guy if you're really old. If Tu had said "we got a bunch of tough guys on our team" would anyone be outraged?

^^^ I see your point. When I first heard "zip 'em up", my first reaction was "body bag", until I realized they meant "zipping their mouths", as in shutting them up. However, this could have been avoided had the coach, SID, whomever not allowed these young men to hold a postgame presser after such a highly charged incident. JMO.

I agree. They shouldn't have had the opportunity to say anything, but I feel like its being blown out of proportion, especially when its drawing attention away from people PHYSICALLY HARMING other human beings.

A press conference took place today at 2pm. The UC team apologized for the actions. Yancy Gates individually apologized and said his actions where outside of his character. He apologized to XU, his family, the city, his teammates, the universities. He broke down in tears and stated "I am no gangster, I am no thug".

In addition to their suspensions, the UC players will be going through anger management counseling. UC AD Whit Babcock addressed the suspensions and stated there was no precedent in college basketball for anything more than than a 3-5 game suspension for fighting. He consulted with other ADs around the country and he levied a bigger suspension than the peer group. He commented this incident does not compare to the LaGarrette Blount incident because those players were in line shaking hands while this was in the middle of a bench clearing melee.

The 6 games are all non-conference cup cakes too. UC is (and has been for many years) the biggest joke of a university in Ohio next to the illustrious Central State.

Call it "talk like a white man" or whatever you want. I call it speaking like a mature grown adult. Black people need to stop pretending they are special and that sounding like an idiot is "part of their culture". Give me a break. If you want to keep that part of your "culture", you can continue to be called a thug and be on welfare the rest of your life.

LOL if you want people to take you seriously when you say something isn't racist, it would help if you didn't act like a racist in your posts.

I agree with some of what Mooney posted, but I also agree the whole "talking like a white person" thing is bullshit. English is a language. It isn't a racial issue. If you can't speak the accepted language of this country and the media of this country, the people who can speak it are going to think you sound like an idiot.

It doesn't have anything to do with using phrases like "zipped em up", which was only stupid because of the situation that had just occurred and the context he used it in. It has to do with having no idea how to form a basic sentence, use proper grammar, speak intelligibly without mumbling, and not end every sentence with "you know what I mean". White people can sound just as dumb trying to speak English, and a lot of them do (there are a few real good examples of that right on this site).

RGIII does speak well. It isn't important because he's black, it's important because he's a quarterback. You can tell he is intelligent and possesses leadership abilities just by hearing him speak, which is very important for his future profession. Same thing with Andrew Luck (a white guy!). For the most part I don't think it really matters how well an athlete speaks, but it isn't racist to point out if they sound like a dumbass when they do.

If you are uneducated, you are going to come off as uneducated when you speak.
