I started the thread and said done for the year. Yancey Gates has had multiple run- ins/conflicts and rule breaking incidents. Combined, they warrant being kicked off the team.

It compares very favorably to a baseball brawl actually
I agree Suh received 2 games for trying to bury a players head in the turf and then stomping a cleat tattoo on his arm.

Gates should receive a suspension as should a number of other players on both teams. Today was a total disgrace for both clubs.

I think a year is too much. 10 games seems about right.

The most comparable situation to Gates is probably LeGarrette Blount, and he was conditionally suspended for the year (and served 10/11 games before being reinstated).

And even that's not the same, because Blount allegedly knocked out an asshole who had just made a racist comment to him. Gates sucker punched a guy who wasn't even looking at him, after whipping a ball at someone, then threw another punch.

In the college game, you cannot be starting fights. That is the message that needs to sent and Gates is the face of the incident.

This is most like the Blount punch, when it was a cheap shot. In other sports, its usually men going at EACH OTHER. Not here. Blount got the year, Hates should as well.

I agree. Also should be noted both had prior discipline/anger management issues before their punches.

Should suh be otu for the year for a stomp with spikes on? Or when Wr's/Dbs get into it and throw punches at eachother should the be suspended for the year too lol?

Those are professional MEN. This is college boys playing. Gates should be gone. Professionals deal with contracts and shit. Its apples to oranges.

#34 should get between 5-10 games. #13 the same. Somebody wearing a warmup also threw a punch. #5 from Xavier will be sitting a few games.

*edit.

A good part of the year, yes. I'll find two examples closest to this. One is in the 60's with a Dodgers pitcher, the other about ten years ago in the minor leagues involving a mule kick.

It doesn't compare at all, basketball melees are deemed worse because at least in other sports when guys thug it out it is in the middle of the field and fans are dozens of yards away behind barriers. The clowns were duking out just a few yards from students and other fans.

1) Chucking the ball, 2) cowardly cold-cocking a guy and 3) trying to get into another fight = multi-game suspension, perhaps off the team and maybe out of school.

Xavier deserves some suspensions as well, but Gates is going to get the biggest punishment, rightfully so.

Are you serious about comparing pro athletes and college kids?
He was referring to something the "Pro Athletes"did while they were in college.

"We've got a bunch of gangsters in our locker room." Yeah, you're regular goodfellas. I think that was an Xavier player who said that in the post-game, and the Musketeers obviously had to stand up and defend themselves to a certain degree after Yancy Gates decided what the hell why not try to win by eating the other team, but what a mess.

After today, I'm not sure anyone could argue against the Crosstown Shootout being the most hostile rivalry in college basketball. It was taken to a new level today. I think Yancy Gates may have overreacted, though.

in a black person dominated sport, a punch should have a season ban. other sports with white dominated (baseball, hockey) its just part of the game!

Don't universities have a behavior code? I think at my school a fight at a campus event would get your ass in a sling quick.

"Whether or not somebody charged at you, and there are camera angles that show Yancy was being charged, there's no excuse. It wasn't showing restraint. There's got to be punishment." - Mick Cronin

Anyone see him being charged? Fairly confident that Frease wasn't the one charging him.

Although to be fair, Cronin could have been talking about 3 or 4 different points in the incident regarding Gates' actions, and not necessarily the sucker punch.

There's no angle possible that shows anyone charging Gates before he escalated the fight by chucking the ball At or about the time of the sucker punch there was another Xavier guy trying to break it all up, but Gates didn't see him. He was busy sucker punching Frease. After that I'm sure some Xavier guys made a move towards him.

I blame mostly Xavier for starting the mess, but Gates more or less singlehandedly escalated it and was out of control the whole time. Cronin should kick him off.
