You're arguing as if everybody makes the decision because they have no other choice.
Pat Tillman was making a pretty good living before going to the military, yes? He sacrificed his current lifestyle, did he not?
Again, 3 of my cousins who are in the military were college graduates. One got out of college making 100K a year as a pharmacist and he still chose to join the military.
People do make sacrifices upon joining the military. Even if your life is in shambles, there are still jobs in retail, food, etc, that probably offer comparable salary and far less risk.
