"I am extremely disappointed with the NCAA's decision regarding Devier Posey," Smith said. "This penalty is harsh considering the nature of the violation and the five game suspension already served by this student athlete."

Gene Smith should probably not make any more statements regarding anything compliance related.

When Posey comes back sit him. By then he will only be a distraction.

I'm starting to think that as an ND alum, Smith is just trolling the hell out of Ohio State and won't stop until he runs the program into the ground.

Sucks for Posey? Why in the world would anyone pity him? He Is as bad as Pryor. Nice car, nice apartment, no show jobs, tattoos. He should be banned from the Woody Hayes athletic complex.

I only say it sucks for him because he gave his word to come back and serve his suspension, then could have left when Tressel left and stuck it out there. He could have already moved on and had all this behind him, but now he has to sit for 5 more games. I don't know OSU's schedule, but would he be back in time to play in the last home game of his career? Probably won't go the way he and most seniors envision.

You're bringing up things that have nothing to do with his suspension. Was Poseys apartment ever mentioned as a reason for punishment? An entire season for the violations he was found guilty of seems like a lot to me. I have a huge problem with the inconsistency of the NCAA

Posey's first game back will be home vs. Penn State. Senior Day.

It's too bad Posey isn't a poor black kid -- the NCAA might have taken pity on him.

pfft.... Dez Bryant lost a whole year for a lesser offense than Posey.

Look, the guy is a repeat offender. He got into additional trouble while the university was being investigated by the NCAA. Letting him come back to play in the Michigan game and a bowl game is a gift IMO. He should get the boot.

Me too. Gene needs to shut up and stop kissing the NCAA's ass. He should just file his report and then let the NCAA levy the penalty. All this self flagellation doesn't mean a thing. The NCAA is going to do what it's going to do, and OSU should do nothing more than the minimum because it's obvious that cooperation has no benefits. Smith should never have fired his coach or volunteered to vacate last season. The penalties levied are way out line, and simply encourage not reporting, because reporting has no advantages. The system punishes the programs that have screwed up, but are trying to be honest, while rewarding the cheaters who cover their tracks. The NCAA has just proved that any notion of it being an advocate for college athletes is a sham. It has essentially ruined Posey...denying him almost a full year of development, and a chance at the NFL for a relatively picayune sum of money. A two game suspension with the caveat of repaying the 'improper' benefits should have been more than enough to create a teachable moment.
Dez Bryant lost a whole year for a lesser offense than Posey.
I rest my case. Another case... non OSU related...when heavy handed punishment was handed down. One injustice is now used to justify more injustice.

Yeah, and look at the punishment handed down to the players at Miami. This stuff goes both ways, for every Dez Bryant that gets a harsh punishment there is a guy that gets off easy for much worse.

I agree with you the NCAA is inconsistent. I don't agree with those who say "Poor Devier Posey". He's earned his fate.

He was getting paid for jobs he didn't even show up to. Regardless of the amount of money, that is going to be severly punished. I really don't understand the defense of this.

Posey made a mistake, I don't think it deserves a 9 game suspension. I don't think people are defending his behavior, some have a problem with the punishment though. Like I have said before, its the inconsistency of the NCAA that bothers me
