As many know by know, Reyes requested to be taken out after getting a hit in his first at bat to make it harder for Braun to surpass him.

What coward.

Would you have done that?

Although it wasnt a batting title in question (he had it all wrapped up). Ted Williams went into the last day of the season batting 400 in 1941. They had a DH and he played both games, and went 6-8 to raise his avg to .406 for the season.

One thing I didnt know until I just looked it up but in 1941 the sacrifice fly was considered an at bat and if it was under the same rule as of today he would have hit .416 that season.

Ted Wiilliams is credited with saying that he didnt believe he deserved the .400 if he sat out that last day.

Nobody is or will be Ted Williams. I don't think it is that big of a deal but that's just my opinion.

Typical of the selfish attitude of a majority of today's players.

Yeah, he believed in obsolete concepts like a day's work for a day's pay. What a piece of crap.

The Mets need something to cheer for, so good for Reyes. I mean, I remember how overjoyed I was when Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez won the batting title while the team was winning something like 26 games that season. Pride overflowed.

ESPN did an article on this.

I didnt know that Griffey Sr went into the last game of the season with the hitting lead. He sat out the final game. The guy who was second went like 4-4 and then Griffey Sr asked to be inserted into the game, did so and went o-2 I think and lost the batting title.

I wish Braun woulda beaten Reyes out because of this yesterday. Maybe somethinng like if Reyes had to only go 1-3 to win it..that woulda beeen classic

My thoughts, too. Not a big deal but Reyes is a dingleberry for doing it.

I would understand if he had an incentive in his contract where he got a huge bonus for winning a batting title or something, but since he didn't, lame.

Bonuses like that aren't allowed in contracts anymore, or at least that's what was said yesterday when they were talking about it. They can have it for MVPs/Cy Youngs, etc but not for stuff that is strictly based off of numbers.

hmm good point. I know I heard it yesterday. I don't recall who said it. Possibly Barry Larkin who is a former Red (clueless).

I guess we are both right. They can't have incentives for stats but they can have them for Games played, innings pitched, plate appearances (not at bats), winning awards that are voted on. Bonuses for winning a statistical title are prohibited because they would be considered performance based. Batting championships, leading the league in HRs are not allowed.

Yeah...kinda weak, but if you had a good enough season to go 1/1 in the last game of the season to virtually lock a batting title....well let's just say no one else in the entire league could even have that option.

His only mistake was leaving versus the Reds....coulda got to .340
