I wasn't around to see a game at the old stadium down by Cornerstone, but I've walked down there. I got goosebumps walking around that old stadium and I never played there or saw a game. You just get a sense of it being a nasty pit with so much character. I just felt more on top of the field looking down from the stands. That had to be one heck of a place to play. I don't know where everybody parked but who cares about that. I understand why they would move up North. Follis Field is roomier, and more capacity... but just seems desolate for some reason.

^^^I was fortunate enough to play in the last Orrville/Wooster game at Maurer Field and the first Orrville/Wooster game at Follis Field...there are no comparisons at all. Maurer had all the history and the best part as a visiting team was that the locker room was directly under the home side. You could hear the band, the fans stomping/chearing, and when Orrville would walk out of the tunnel...plan for about anything to be said to you and maybe even thrown on you!!! It was a fun place to play!

I think Maurer led to some of the swag those Wooster teams had back in the day. Glad to see it is still being utilized, youth football, lacrosse, and now the Wooster freshmen are playing their games at Maurer. Some of the old mystic is gone, but it is still an awesome venue.

I will say this at the risk of sounding like a true hypocrite based on some things I have said in the past...I don't blame those kids who leave the Wooster program to play at other schools. I know, we did it with our son and have no regrets.

^^^Yep to all that. It was dirty, nasty, no hot water, cold, and it was an awesome tunnel to walk out of knowing you were going to kick some General hiney that night. They blew that one big time.. This is why I cannot wait to get to Tyger stadium this Friday. What a venue for High School football.

I'm waiting for them to build the McCreary statue at the Main Gate, with a plaque that says "Mike McCreary: King of 6-4. No man did so less with more talent." I think they should rebuild Maurer Field and use it for football, and let Follis be for Soccer. Then maybe the real fans will only show up on Friday nights due to lack of space. Sick of the "Wine & Cheese" Wooster fans...

Let me go on.....First of all CCRolly, regarding revenue, I thnk you answered your own question there. If a majority of the people show up to see the band or gossip about what their neighbor's are doing, they won't see much impact on the revenue the program generates. By your own admission and supported by Barbarian, true hard core football fans are the minority in the stands any given Friday night. Losing those fans won't have much of an impact financially.

Secondly regarding Maurer Field, back in the day kids had to EARN the RIGHT to play on that field. No pride in your current facilities today. And 5K, there still is no hot water in the showers there. Just thought you would like to know.

Lastly, if a kid wants to pursue a career in law or acting, speech and debate is a wonderful program for them to hone thier skills in. And, yes, Wooster has one of the finest programs in the state. However, how that is more important to the citizens of this school district than the football program, leaves me, well, speechless.

The few seats there were at Maurer Field would easily fit in front of the seating at Follis and you could watch the game without binoculars to see the field. Everything is just so far away and it so open all around the field, it has no football atmosphere.

That speech and debate sign at the city limits says it all for Wooster. I read a letter to the editor in the Daily Record about a year ago that stated how unfair that the speech and debate team in Wooster barely got mentioned in the paper whereas high school sports gets a whole section of the paper. Sad. I cancelled my subscription to the paper because I'm just so disconnected with the place I live. No need to read the news from there.

I live in Wooster, been here about 12 years and looks like it will be where I grow old. Nice city.. good people.. good place to raise your family... yadda yadda yadda. Just not much of a high school sports town. In particular football. My goal is to buy some acreage out in the county and have my kids go to one of the WCAL schools, or maybe Orrville. I want them to enjoy the sports part of high school. I just don't get that sense from Wooster.

And to be fair, I think the Wooster Booster Club does an incredible job trying to maintain the fans interest in the program. Last year they hosted tailgate parties, parades, and some other pre game activities trying to reach out to the fans. I just think it is time for some new faces on the field.

Interestingly enough, I know there is at least one if not more writers for the DR on this site, I wonder how closely they are watching this thread. Gotta be killing them to read all this and not comment.

All they need to do is win. It is no secret to generating fan support.....Win, Win and win again. They have a nice ball club this year. I think week 10 will be a dandy for sure. If Woo pulls out a victory against Orrville the fans will be back. Heck, they might be 7-2 and looking at playoffs with a win that week. If that is the case and the fans still stay away.....well, then you have problems.

They have been beaten by Wadsworth and Ashland? Those are two very good teams. Ashland may be the OCC favorite again this year. With their numbers and coach they are a tough team to beat.

No, sports don't count in wooster. Thats why I gave credit to the speech and debate team. Thats all that matters in wooster right? That and the band of course.

How would the Wooster faithful feel about hiring Bill McMillan as the new head coach? Would he even apply? I dont know, but its just a thought!

5knots, winning solves a lot of issues, but I think Wooster is to the point of not caring because they know what the result is already going to be. I don't think winning will fix their problems.

Well, you know Coach Mac is itching to get back in it especially for fact that he agreed to help Bill Dennis in Rittman...that shows me that he is hard up trying to get back on the sidelines. However, he may not want that role as a head coach again.

Another name to throw out there is....Bill Dennis. He may be looking for employment next season!

Winning should solve some of the problems in Wooster. They have had a couple of decent years lately. Yes, you have to win on the field to retain someof your home grown talent. Yes winning puts more butts in the seats, yes winning increases revenue. To a certain percentage of fans, I don't know if winning or losing changes anything, I suppose Wooster should be happy that those people continue to turn out and attend the games. It at least keeps the stadium full. Would a program which consistantly wins 8-9 games and makes the play offs change the core attitude of most Wooster residents? Probably not. Let me say, probably not until they could see it would continue year in and year out.

I went to the Edgewood 7th grade game last night against Mansfield Senior. Wooster 7th grade I would guess has 60+ kids on the team. And one heck of a RB and some stud LB's. My understanding is that the current 8th and 9th grade classes have similar numbers and talent. Wooster can no longer do those kids a diservice by letting them get to the high school level and having the program fall off.

Anyway, CC, will you have a "Fire the McCreary Family" float in tonight's Homecoming parade? I'll look for it.

That's the problem....wooster has really good teams from 7- freshman.....but then they get to the varsity coaches and can't continue that success.

However, Bill McMillan would do a better job at Wooster than their current "croc" wearing coach. Man, oh man, people in Orrville are still pissed about Mac (Wooster) getting the job here. (it's mostly the people my age and older, btw!)
