Lots of people out there who call themselves journalists who aren't -- and lots of journalists out there who think they're doing their jobs well, and are quite delusional. My former profession has gone to hell. Yes OSU is all that, but at some point, for some coaches, expectations play a role. LOL, yeah ok. I mean Tressel's main recruiting ground was Ohio and he was only one of the most successful coaches in the country the last decade. Disrespecting the quality and depth of Ohio's high school football players is utter stupidity.
It's tiered like this, in my opinion:
Texas, California, Florida
Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania
Louisiana, New Jersey, Alabama, Illinois, Michigan

I'm not saying it isn't good talent. And it helps that OSU gets whoever they want from Ohio. But look at the talent in the SEC. And now look at the talent at OSU this year. I get what is being said about the High School talent. When a state loses population at the rate Ohio is, you are going to see the pool of athletes drop. Ohio is still a top five state in football talent, but stating that talent isn't what it was 20 years ago..or even 10 years ago is closer to the truth than most are comfortable with.
For example, my son's freshman team this year could beat 60% of the D6 schools in Ohio. When they were 8th graders, they could have won the Tri Valley Conference South.

Michigan HS football isnt bad at all. I hadnt noticed until a couple years ago, but they do pump out some big talent.

Ohio has never lost population in a census. Yes, growth is slower than the Sun Belt and Southeast, but it's not non-existent. Just because the football talent (or amount of people) isn't as prevalent in SE Ohio anymore doesn't mean the rest of the state is as bad off. While this is true, the population of the state is aging more than some Southern states as younger folks leave to find jobs elsewhere and don't stay and raise families. That said, the talent level is STILL among the elite states, even if perhaps not as many players are coming out of Ohio.
I recall hearing or reading some comments from college coaches (not OSU or Ohio) who said one reason Ohio produces quality players is the outstanding coaching kids get through high school. The number of Ohioans (or coaches who learned their craft in Ohio) who have become outstanding college coaches would seem to back this up.

IF this happens EVERY head coach in country will be asking for a BIG raise. I figure Gee will give Meyer at least $1,000,000 more per year than the current highest paid Head Coach in College football. Peanuts for Ohio State. Gee recently received the single largest check from an alumni in the history of college donations. $100 MILLION.

I'm starting to think that Ohio just has great coaches. I don't know the economics of school funding and class sizes of Ohio schools compared to Florida schools.
But I saw Hilliard Davidson play last year and saw Dublin Coffman tonight. Both teams are elite teams in the state of Ohio over the last 10 years. Neither team had great talent. But the thing that separated them from maybe a school in Florida or a talented team like Glenville is their discipline. That's all coaching.
So, maybe the coaching in Ohio HS football is better than other states, which makes people think the individuals talents are greater than what it truly is.
That may be a stretch, but it was something I was thinking about watching Coffman tonight, because they didn't have any players that wowed me.
