Peterson isn't coming to the Midwest. Not sure why he's ever mentioned. Patterson would be a great choice, but I have a feeling he has his eye on a couple specific jobs. Meyer is #1 for every logical reason.Mulva;919163 wrote:Yeah. I wasn't being completely serious, but he's a guy I would at least consider. He played at Oklahoma State though, so I'm not sure he'd even be interested in a move.
Off the top of my head, my top few choices would be Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson, Bob Stoops, or possibly Meyer (great coach but I'm not sure I trust him to stick around for the long haul).
The 2nd tier of guys I'd consider who are less proven would be Gundy, Steve Sarkisian, or (the only 2 coordinators I'd consider) would be Chryst or Kirby Smart. I think Smart is going to get the Georgia job if Richt is let go at the end of the year though.
T. Boone Pickens won't let Gundy leave. Sarkisian? Not sure about him.
OSU needs a guy with Midwestern ties. If it's not Meyer, I think the other two Stoops brothers get looks. I know it's along, long shot, but what about the Mount Union coach? Would OSU ever consider looking in-state?

This. This. This. I've never understood why the offensive line at OSU has always underperformed.krambman;919184 wrote:Why? Jim Bollman.
Every Buckeye fan has known he sucks pretty much since he arrived in Columbus. Unfortunately those in power have never seemed to mind too much. For me, it's less about the play calling, because when we've had athlete's we've had good creative offenses, but it's more about the annual underachievement of the offensive line. The o-line is the position he coaches, and they consistently under perform more than any other position for the Buckeyes.

Tress didn't mess with the defense and our offense was pretty putrid at times. That defense was sick though

Why is Gundy coming up? That "air raid" offense doesn't really ever seem to lead to championships. The media loves it and it is fun to watch, but air raid teams seem like they generally are good for 2-3 losses a year

Petersen spent a year at Pitt as an assistant, so I wouldn't be so quick to say he won't leave the west coast. I wouldn't expect it, but there's no harm in reaching out to him.thedynasty1998;919189 wrote:Peterson isn't coming to the Midwest. Not sure why he's ever mentioned. Mike Stoops is going to get fired at Arizona. He hasn't had much success as a head coach at all, and he's got no shot. I really don't know anything about the other Stoops (Mark?) to comment.
Sarkisian is unproven and a pretty off-the-wall name to throw in, but he's another guy who's a great recruiter, had a ton of success (albeit in a QB coach/OC role) at USC, and he's got Washington back on the rise in a hurry. I think he's going to land at a premier job at some point.
To put it simply, results. Oklahoma State has literally improved every single year since he became head coach.jordo212000;919199 wrote:Why is Gundy coming up? 4-7 (1-7)
7-6 (3-5)
7-6 (4-4)
9-4 (5-3)
9-4 (6-2)
11-2 (6-2) school record in wins
4-0 (1-0) so far this year and a top 10 ranking
But again, he has a huge contract at his alma mater and T Boone Pickens backing them financially. I think he's set there.

That's because you have to be able to run the ball in the red zone to win. When you run that kind of offense you struggle against good teams because they force you to have sustained drives, and you have to run the ball to do that. This scheme by very nature makes you one-dimensional.jordo212000;919199 wrote:Why is Gundy coming up? That "air raid" offense doesn't really ever seem to lead to championships. Fickell has lost this team, I'm afraid. Kids aren't buying into him any longer. Jordan Hall said after the game that they practiced misdirection plays all week and never ran a single one yesterday.
Listening to 97.1 The Fan driving home last night, they said by losing two games early, the big name coaches, like Bob Stoops, are going to get taken out of play by their respective universities real quick (i.e. by offering them big fat contract extensions) because they know tOSU will be calling and trying to poach them. They say a school like Oklahoma or Nebraska is NOT going to let that happen. They had a lot of other stuff to say too...lol

Who were the guys on 97.1? Not that that isn't true, but most of the guys on that station are morons (especially Adam Neft).GoJPM!;919323 wrote:Fickell has lost this team, I'm afraid. A lot of people think Common Man and Torg are idiots, but there's no denying they're funny as hell. They definitely bring humor, which is especially nice after that abortion yesterday

They also call things as they see them, which is appreciated

They don't even understand what a zone blocking scheme is and when someone called them and tried to explain it, they called him a moron, laughed, and hung up on him. I don't listen to them during football season.thedynasty1998;919853 wrote:I love them. But I would never believe any "insight" they may claim to have.

Dantonio blew his "interview" last week but I still think he's in the mix. Peterson would walk across the country for an interview given the chance, who are you kidding? Midwest ties or not he's a legit contender and would jump at the offer to coach OSU. Boise's recent infractions give him negative points though, especially in the climate we're in now. Contract extension or not I still think Bob Stoops will get a call, OSU definitely has the cash to buy out the contract if they want him bad enough. Pelini is also a contender. But Urban still leads the pack...unfortunately.

Pelini and Stoops are set where they are...why would they want to leave teams that are top 10 every year (pretty much) to go to OSU while they are under a complete microscope. Peterson may come over...but he wont have the success playing in a real conference on a weekly basis.
As for Gundy's offense...they have actually had some pretty good rushing stats over the years for a passing team.
Honestly...OSU needs to keep Luke on for as long as the sanctions are set for. Let him be the one to do the dirty work on cleaning up the program and suffer the losses, then bring in a big name coach. OSU wont find a big name guy who wants to come in and have to be the one who suspends players or kicks them off the team. They wont want to have to coach a team if there is a post season ban. Let Luke do all of that.
Or...you could go with Ed "Straight Arrow" Genero

Fickell with Glen Mason as OC/ Asst head coach with an all new offensive staff (although maybe keep Dick Tressel, the RB's tend to do pretty well under him)ksig489;922494 wrote: Honestly...OSU needs to keep Luke on for as long as the sanctions are set for. I question this as well. Also worth noting, is the fact that there are sometimes league guidelines that restrict conference schools from hiring other members' coaches. Does the Big Ten have a rule such as this? If so, the people suggesting Dantonio and Pelini are out.se-alum;922565 wrote:Why Pelini?
Also, Bob Stoops is a terrible choice. He can't win bowl games.

Given the fact that Glenn Mason flew to Columbus and interviewed for the Ohio State job in 2001 when he was still the coach at Minnesota would lead me to believe that the B1G has no such rule.dlazz;922580 wrote:I question this as well. If I was an OSU fan...Id want Dantonio. He has been there, he has recruited from there, he knows the conference, he runs a system that will work with the current players.

From Ohio, played for Ohio State, and is a proven coach. He's like Fickell only he knows how to be a head coach
