5 dead at the scene and 40-50 more taken to emergency care according to the L.A. Times.

EDIT: Associated Press says 25 have life-threatening injuries, another 25 were seriously hurt, and another 25 have minor injuries.

I'm sorry if I'm being insensitive, but if we question letting 80 year olds drive, why the hell are they allowed to fly a plane? Especially something like a P-51 Mustang.

Fucking this! My thoughts exactly. 80 year old pilot?!

Thoughts to the everyone affected by this...but this should never have happened.

For some reason, that reminds me of a few South Park episodes. "Oh, SHIT!" from the tourettes episode, and the way the plane crashed was similar to the Al Qaeda planes from the Jersey Shore episode.

Horrific.

Sounds like this event has been cited in the past for crappy safety measures, though i'm not sure anything would have helped in this situation.

Terrible, probably could have been avoided, but still an unbelievably terrible way to die.

i am trying to figure out why that plane was even flying like that. it was an air race, not a stunt show.

It appears the plane nose dives from some 500 feet. My guess is either mechanical failure or stroke/heart attack (given his age, I'd say the latter is a good bet).

There are pics of the plane breaking apart (shedding panels) right before the crash. Seems as though the only age that played a factor was the planes

No way, you have to jump to conclusions and blame the old pilot.

Jimmy's whole family was right there in the VIP stands where he hit. One of his grandsons attends Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University here. He raced at Daytona a few times in the 80's in a sports car he bought from Bobby Rahal. He was friends of Gator QB John Brantley's family. Just a terrible accident.
