As of today....

Pirates 2.5 games back
DBacks 4 games back
Indians 1.5 games back

So how are they not contending?

Your not hoping one of your prospects live up to the hype.

Teams w/ monster payrolls don't have to worry much about their farm systems. Teams with small market payrolls have to be very protective of their farm system.

A strong belief in the ATL organization that the package they offered for Pence was markedly better than deal HOU made with Philadelphia.

Pence just got his first hit and RBI in the 8th to give the Phillies 7-4 lead. He will finish the night at 1-5. Just happy he got that first hit out of the way.

Philly will have a nice big window over the next few years, but after that they are going to need to turn into the Yankees - Red Sox if they want to keep winning. Meaning that they are going to need to overpay for veterans in free agency
