MLB.com ranked Cosart and Singleton the 37th and 38th best prospects in baseball.

Hunter Pence will wear #3 for the Phillies.

Phillies know they are at the end of their window with Howard's monster contract, Ibanez is old, Halladay is older, Oswalt is old, Polanco and Utley can't stay healthy, Rollins is slowing down, Victorino is a homo, etc. And they gave up their top 2 prospects? At least they are getting $1 million, LOL. They have to over pay now because they will be passed by the Nationals in the East in the next few years.

Damn man, you need to get your drinking under control. What I am saying is that the Phillies are old, their farm system has been depleted, and they just traded away their top 2 prospects. Do you think all of the players I listed will magically play baseball forever? The Nationals have a good young core with more coming up, same with the Braves. I would have liked them to trade one or two of their surplus of young arms to get either Pence or Beltran, but at the same time, neither of those guys would have filled the need of a center fielder. Obviously Philly improved there already good chances of winning the WS this year, but as I said, they had to because their window is shrinking. Calm down.

I guess the difference right now is the Phillies want to win now, next year and the year after. The Braves on the other hand are looking to win 5-7 years down the road. I think the trade was great move. Everyone gets so caught up on your farm system. How the hell do you know if they will produce you don't. But you do know Pence will he has done it now in Pros you know what your getting.
Your not hoping one of your prospects live up to the hype.

It is a tough to give up two of your top prospects, even top ones in the whole league, but this phillies team is extremely close to winning it all. Teams that are this close can afford to do that. A team like cincy cannot because it takes more than a Hunter Pence, or just one big hitter or pitcher, to make them a contender for the WS.

They may feel this in a few years.....but damn...if I am philly fan and my team has a WS under my belt, and is literally on the cusp on another one, i am willing to give up my two best prospects.



Anyone see a quote in SI about ryan howard and his k's? Think it was from Mitch WIllimans. It said his propensity of striking out alot has HELPED him hit more homeruns.

How?

Because since he does K alot, pitchers think they can strike him out so they pitch to him. If he didnt K alot, he would get pitched around even more!

But the Braves can still win now. They will probably end up with Bourn or Upton and won't have to give up anything close to their top two prospects plus two PTBNL. My point again was that PHI has made big trades three years in a row now and only have a depleted farm system to show for it.

Many fans are OK with selling out your farm system if it results in a title. Phillles are right there to do it all. It was a steep price to pay, no doubt about that! Braves may be set up better for the long run than Philly but in the short term, and that is what they are looking at, the Phillies are the team.

If the Phillies don't win it all this year or next year, they will be hurting. They won't have the prospects to replace current players that are close to their downside. This will catch up to them eventually. But, they do look very good right now.

Did they make a big trade the year they won it? Lee two years ago, Oswalt last year, and now Pence. They made the WS but lost to the Yanks, then lost in the NLCS last year. This year is TBD.

This. They are obviously the odds on favorite to win it this year and Pence makes them better.

Philly will have a nice big window over the next few years, but after that they are going to need to turn into the Yankees - Red Sox if they want to keep winning. Meaning that they are going to need to overpay for veterans in free agency

This lol. Have been trying to explain this to Jordo, but he just doesn't get it. Maybe he will start to get it when the Reds either start selling or losing their top pieces.

Baseball monopoly? First off, you show that you have no idea what a monopoly is (you mention two teams and their dominance; if it were really a monopoly, there would only be one team dominating everybody).

Second, of the teams you consider to be running a monopoly in baseball, one of them didn't even make the freaking playoffs last year. And the other didn't even make the World Series this past season.

The Giants and the Rangers played last season... in case you forgot. The Red Sox haven't been in the series since 2007. (i.e. just as many times as the Tampa Bay Rays).

Oh and if there was ever a year where you couldn't say "only a few are competing" it is this year. In the AL 8 of the 14 teams are within at least 6 games of first place in their respective division and in the National League it is 7 of 16 (would be 8 if you count the Reds who are 6.5 back).

Among the teams in contention you have the Pirates, Indians, Diamondbacks, Brewers, and Braves. From that group, the team with the highest payroll is the Braves and they rank 15th

No one argued that small market teams can't compete. The fact of the matter is they are at a disadvantage when it comes to signing, keeping, and trading for players, which in return makes it harder for them to compete longer than 1 year, and it makes it harder for them to compete NOW for a world series. You are kidding yourself if you don't think so.

Unsure if they did. Just saying that the phillies are right there. It would be a good bet as any that thy would win it all. Braves I think are a little bit away yet. Their young players mature a little bit and they will overtake the phillies within two yers I believe.

The NFL is by far the best league at preventing the large markets from dominating the smaller markets. There is no question in that. But look at the other leagues, larger markets / attractive destinations all have a much easier time winning and maintaining their winning ways. (Free agents want to go to these destinations. The vast majority of players don't want to play in Oklahoma City, Cleveland, or Buffalo. They want to play in LA, Boston, or New York

I guess I'm one of those people who is in the now! I want another World Series now not in 3 years. I want it this year. Like I said how the hell do we know how Singleton and Cosart will perform in the Majors? We don't know yes they are the Phillies top prospect but I am very happy with the trade since we get Pence through the 2013 season. It is not like the Philles are only getting him for the rest of the season. The Phillies needed a good bat from the right side that is what we got.

Yup. You guys will be just fine for the next 2-3 years, and in that time, you can draft well and replace the chips you just traded away

LOL Jordo on listing the Pirates, Indians and D Backs as contending. Contending for what? As for your definition of monopoly....as I stated, the Yanks and Bosox collectively run a baseball monopoly. Individually, the Yankees and Red Sox (and now the Phillies) are in fact oligopolies, which means they both share the exact same advantages as pure monopolies do. In proper context, the terms can in fact be interchangeble. No fee for the lesson. LOL.
