He isn't careless enough to leave the gun there if he didn't mean to. It very well may not have even been loaded. That's also why Gus didn't go back to his car. When Jesse said that the kid had been poisoned he knew Walt had to be up to something and could possibly be around to try to hurt him. (Because who the fuck else would poison Brock?)
