LOL, nice try, but OU has a police department. So, if their police department is issuing legal tickets and legally booting, what are you proving?

He is trying to prove that private individuals have the right to boot cars, but there are 2 problems with what he is using as evidence.

#1 OU is a STATE institution, not a private
#2 OU has a valid police force to enforce all laws

Would you suggest the scam artist's actions were justified as a result of the OP's actions?

Right, except parking enforcement falls under the univeristy's Parking Services, not the police. Or how about Standard Parking in Cleveland who enforces private parking lots and who i've seen boot vehicles in place.

The parking enforcement is still backed by the police department and BMV, just like the meter maids in Columbus.

I've never heard of a private lot booting cars that are not supposed to be there. If it is in a contract for paying (which it has to be in a signed contract) they could boot it for non-payment. You can't just go out and boot cars because you have a tow sign up.

On OU's campus, it does. Not for outside the campus.

You're telling me the university's parking services is in charge of all of Athens County parking?

i've been trying and looking, but cant find anything specific to booting. the ORC states "removal for storage", thats not booting. i've found other articles from other states that says booting by private companies is shady, but legal.

Exactly. You could've just listened to everyone that already knew this was not a legal practice in Ohio instead of arguing (wrongly) about it. This guy had no authority to boot a vehicle, all he could ever have done is call a tow truck or tow it himself if he was contracted by the property owner to do so.

Show me the law stating booting is illegal. You've cited towing regulations, show me booting. So far the only states I have found stating it is, is California and Washington.

This guy in GA tried fighting the boot and lost.

Las Vegas allows car booting by private companies. If you follow the links, you'll see the CA supreme court decision. (i couldnt find the OH law equivalent to what was cited in the decision.)

There is only a law stating what CAN be done, not what cannot be done. I know from experience, you cannot boot as a private company. The signs that are approved by Ohio only say that the car will be towed.

ORC 4513.60 establishes rules for TOWING and establishing a private tow away zone. nothing stating that towing is the ONLY thing that can be done. nothing stating a private company cannot immobilize a vehicle on private property.
The owner posts on the owner’s property a sign, that is at least eighteen inches by twenty-four inches in size, that is visible from all entrances to the property, and that contains at least all of the following information:
to me, that shows that signs can vary, aslong as they have the 3 thing stated in the law.
