And to think I married a BAM. (glad she likes me)
I primarily chose the AF because that was what my Father served in. I stayed away from the Navy because I don't like water. I was recruited pretty hard by the Army, but it really didn't interest me. My Bro-in-Law, at the time was in the Marines so I knew their recruiter pretty well. He never tried to sway me from my decision since he knew my heart was in joining the AF, unlike the pushy Army recruiters.
As far as being a Rifleman first, that's good if that's what you want to do. I wanted something technical so I chose to be an Avionics Tech on F-16s. I never had to carry a weapon or had to worry about being pulled from my Primary job to man a post. We had a career field for people who wanted to carry weapons, the Security Police. My job was to keep several Weapons, F-16s, flyable.
The mentality of each branch is different as we have different rolls. When I was in the AF everyone had specific career field to perform in and were trained in it. I believe they thought why would we spend all the money and time training you in your AFSC, to pull you away for Base Defense when they've trained Airmen to do that as their job. No need for me to go to Infantry training as we had no such thing. We had Aircraft, of which we sent out Officers, for them to perform their Air rolls. (Not my fault)
Luckily with the training I received on Computer Principles, way back in 1987, prepared me for my current job in the Computer field. As for my now ex Bro-in-Law who was trained to lead a Squad in an house to house Urban environment while taking fire, he's been a Garbage man since leaving the Marine Corps back in the late 80's. Not a bad job, as it pays alright and he likes the hours, but it's a job I wouldn't want...much like his job while he was in the Corps.
I respect all branches and like good hearted kidding, but I always remember we are on the same team. (like it or not)
Now in good fun a picture of a T-Shirt The Wife bought on Vacation last week.
...I said if they had one for the Air Force it would read "Eating good while staying out of harms way"
