Ah, back to reality. Only the 3rd inning and it's already 7-0 Brewers.

Ross Ohlendorf's return was less than inspiring. Today, Aaron Thompson makes his major league debut after spending much of the year at AA and then 11.1 innings at AAA. At least they're giving the start to a young guy who might have some degree of potential instead of a retread like Burres or Gallagher.

Thompson's first inning was a scoreless one where he got two outs with a runner on third. Good start to his MLB career. Hopefully he can deliver four or five more like that.

And the Pirates take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as McCutchen sacs in Tabata.

Through 2.2 innings, Thompson has gotten through the order once with no issues. Two hits, no runs.
Now comes more of a test, as all their line-up has seen him once and will have something to go on.

2-0 Pirates through 5. Thompson pitched 4.1 shutout innings. Got in trouble in the fifth, but Grilli finished off the inning with no damage done. Now, they just need the relief to get through four consecutive innings without blowing it. The past few weeks put that as a long shot.

Pirates win 2-0 today. Hanrahan had a rocky start to the ninth, but struck out three straight batters to finish the game.
2-2 split with the Brewers about feels like a major victory with the way things have been over the past few weeks.

Thompson was awesome today as the Bucs win 2-0. Quite an accomplishment to shut out the Brewers.

Pirates trade Matt Diaz to Atlanta for Nate McLouth.
Edit: jk on McLouth. The old PTBNL.

At least McLouth probably could have hit, I don't know, ONE FUCKING HOME RUN over five months of the season. Diaz was a worthless signing even by Pittsburgh free agency standards. Overbay stunk and was released, but he at least had some remotely competent level of production to go with his .230 average. Diaz hit about .260, but gave no power or production.karen lotz;878403 wrote:Pirates trade Matt Diaz to Atlanta for Nate McLouth.

They also traded career AAA maestro John Bowker to the Phillies for hopefully a free second-class cheese steak. Obviously not the ones Philly is famous for...more of a rip-off with fake meat and stuff. Hopefully that means Starling Marte will get a few games at AAA before the season ends. He's kicking major ass in Altoona. .330 average and he's finally hitting for power (12 or so homers this year, with most of them coming in the past couple months).

Swept by the fucking Astros. Great... 13 hits in three games against a team that's the worst in MLB by a large margin.

Down to the Dodgers after the 6th 3-1. Got the Cubs next. If the Cubs sweep the Pirates then they're tied in the standings. Good thing is the Pirates have had the Cubs number lately. What a shitty August.

Well, except for being swept by the Cubs in a fairly recent series during the 10-game losing streak.GoPens;879678 wrote:Down to the Dodgers after the 6th 3-1. Got the Cubs next. Last night was another low. Losing to Dana Eveland, who was a Pirate for a bit last year, until getting dumped after giving up 9 runs in 9.2 innings. Which made it a given that he'd dominate them.

Yea, I should have said success earlier in the year. Oh well, we're still 15 games ahead of the Astros...they can't catch us, can they???????????

Hopefully not. From what I gather, McCutchen got hit by a pitch and had to leave today's game in the first inning. Hopefully that isn't a long-term thing. I like Xavier Paul, as a late-game pinch-hitter/defensive replacement. As an everyday player...the appeal really declines. He's the 2011 version of Delwyn Young.GoPens;880659 wrote:Yea, I should have said success earlier in the year. Preliminary reports is McCutchen's injury is just a contusion and not a break. Might miss a couple of games.

Derek Lee hit a grand slam in the top of the 9th to beat the Cubs. Wonder if the Pirates will try and get him back next year.

I wouldn't mind that if he can still go for a full season o' quality. A good veteran influence if he can still go (his Orioles stats were a good bit lacking compared to his career). If he can't go...we don't need another Overbay sucking the life out of first base.GoPens;882204 wrote:Derek Lee hit a grand slam in the top of the 9th to beat the Cubs. Pirates won their second straight series last night. Back to their 2-1 series-winning ways, apparently.
In other news, high-A affiliate Bradenton is in the playoffs, tied 1-1 with the Mets' high-A team. They lost the first game, but won the second 10-0 to send it to a deciding contest.
Also, Jeff Locke will debut for the Pirates in the near future. Locke, who with Charlie Morton and AAA outfielder Gorkys Hernandez was involved in the Nate McLouth deal, will take Morton's spot, as he's getting skipped a turn. I think it might be Saturday, but I'm not sure. This year, Locke was average at AA Altoona, but had a few good starts at Indy after getting called up a month or so ago.

Pirates sign GM Neal Huntington to a 3 year extension. I'm not sure how I take this. The guy can draft but man, he sucks at getting free agents.

I was expected two years with an option for a third. Instead, it's three years with an option for a fourth, isn't it? And to celebrate, the team gets like negative-four hits in three games against Florida while giving up 8343 runs.GoPens;892203 wrote:Pirates sign GM Neal Huntington to a 3 year extension.
