Pirates now guaranteed to be above .500 at the half way mark of the season. Tonight was the 1st interleague road series win since 2003.

Pirates split with the Nats following today's 10-2 domination. Too bad a couple of those runs couldn't have been used the last two days, considering they had two one-run losses, but it's nice to get an emphatic win occasionally instead of all these games that have been going down to the final out.
Correia gets his 11th win to move back into a big tie for first in the NL and maybe all of baseball.

Nice situation.
Pirates are 1 1/2 back and the next nine games are against the Astros and Cubs.

They had 2 late leads in the 2 losses to the Nats didn't they? That would have made it really interesting in the standings.

In what seems like their 85th attempt to get three games over .500 in the past three weeks, they currently are trailing the Astros 1-0 midway through the second. They showed they can hit Myers in the first, but baserunning took a run away. Presley got a single, but was thrown out going for two. Later, Jones hit a double. Presley likely would have scored if he had been on base. They have a LOT of speed, but make too many stupid young/dumb mistakes on the basepaths.

Score is tied at 1-1. Sad thing is that the Pirates have six hits in two innings, but only one run. And currently have two players called out trying to get an extra base, as the second inning ended with Harrison getting called out at home on a Presley single.

The score is now 3-1 thanks in big part to two errors in the top of the third, both on Josh Harrison. Motherfucker...

RBI double from All-Star Snub McCutchen makes it 3-2.

And Overbay ties it with a two-out RBI single. He's had a couple good games in a row. Average is up to .236. Another 30 points and he won't be a flop of a signing!

After five, Pittsburgh is up 4-3 on a RBI single by Walker. 12 hits, but only 4 runs. Combined with three errors, this is a game they could be winning as easily as they did over Washington yesterday. That worries me.

Houston's stupidity benefited Pittsburgh in the top of the sixth. For some reason, with runners on second and third and one out, they let Brett Myers (5 innings, 91 pitches, 12 hits, 4 runs) bat. He grounded into a fielder's choice to get the runner at third out at home and then Maholm was able to get Bourn to K to get out of the inning.

Pittsburgh's apparently going to give Maholm the seventh (he has 91 pitches, but struggled in the sixth) against Keppinger, Pence and Lee. They're a combined 4-7 with two RBIs, a HBP and a sac fly. The top of the seventh could decide this game...

Two-out RBI triple by Presley gives the Bucs some breathing room at 5-3! It'd be great if D'Arnaud could drive in Presley to make it a bit more comfortable.
Which didn't happen. Still, 5-3 is better than 4-3.
...guh...that was a darbypitcher-like observation...shoot me...

Strange. According to Yahoo, Maholm batted for himself in the bottom of the sixth, but Dan McCutchen is pitching the seventh. Unless they felt Maholm would do as good of a job sacrificing the runner as anyone OR decided to go to the pen after stretching out the lead a bit.

After getting Keppinger out, McCutchen gives up a double to Pence. Which makes me wonder how long it will be before Hurdle inevitably says "Fuck it!" and goes to Veras to get the team to the ninth, as he and Hanrahan have been the only consistently trustworthy relievers over the past couple weeks.
EDIT: McCutchen gets Lee out. Two outs, Pence on third. Former Pirate/career journeyman Jason Michaels also gets out. Nice job, Dan. You only raised my heart rate a little bit!

Brett Wallace's Yahoo pic creeps me out. That's a molestation smile.

Fortunately, MLB's best closer got him out, followed by Bourn. After giving up a run during Saturday's first game, he has to be pissed off and ready to take it out on Houston.

Perfect inning and the Pirates finally got three games above .500 after failing nearly a dozen times to do so!!!
Good way to put the pressure on the other three contending teams in the division, as Milwaukee just got underway and the Reds play the Cards later on.
Tomorrow will be a good pitching match-up with Jeff Karstens (better stats than some All-Star selections, but only a 6-4 record) going against Wandy Rodriguez, whose ERA also is sub-3.

If you would have told me before the season started that on the 4th of July the Pirates would be just 1 game out (at this point) I would have called the guys with straight jackets to come take you away...

D'Backs 8-6 win over Brewers
if the Reds beat the Cardinals today the Pirates will be a 1/2 game back.

After needing a ton of chances to go from two to three games above .500, it only took one game to move from three to four. Karstens with another excellent start to move to 7-4 with a 2.55 ERA. Brandon Wood had two hits (one a homer) and three RBIs. If the Brewers lose again (down 7-1 last I checked), Pittsburgh will be in second place behind the Cards by 1.5.

Lost 8-2 tonight. I hate this trend of winning the first two games of the series, getting all pumped for a sweep and then losing the final game--even though you win 2 out of 3 it's still a downer.
Oh well, it's the first week of July and I get bummed when the Pirates lose. I guess that's a good thing compared to the past 18 years when I didn't give a shit by this point of the season.
