BROKEN BACK!!! If Turner comes back this season and can't compete at the same high level he did before the injury, there will be doubts in the minds of NBA GM's. If there is another player with close to similar abilities, Turner will be passed over.....BROKEN BACK. A doctor can look at x-rays and see the breaks are healed properly. What can't be seen are the psychological affects of a BROKEN BACK. The psyche takes more than 8 weeks to be healed, usually an indeterminable length of time.

Turner needs to play a healthy season to ensure being a lottery pick.

"BROKEN BACK"!?? LOL In fact, he doesn't have a broken back, he has a fracture in two of his vertibre that couldn't even be seen on a regular xray.(thus the initial report everything was ok). Someone with a broken back, doesn't walk out of a hospital and go home. Turner was resting at home last nite. The injury is not as serious as it sounds. But its one that has to heal obviously. I actually had a similar injury when I was younger, had some minor back pain...and never knew it was fractured until years later during an xray.
Its nothing that will affect his psychy or his draft status. All players deal with injuries all the time. Its part of playing sports. Turner will be fine. When he comes back, if they decide to do so, I am sure he will be a little rusty from being out of basketball shape and not being able to play bball for a while. He will probably be able to ride a stationary bike within a few weeks. He maybe back sooner then some think. That will be the extent of he will have to deal with long term, period.

The fall looked scary, but nothing that will make you cringe.

I think he could possibly play with this injury if forced, but obviously that's not going to happen. I had an uncle who had two fractures in his vertebrae for years and didn't think much of it.

His draft stock is fine. He will recover fully and still go top 10 in the draft.

This sucks, but at least he will be back for the end of the season and the big 10 tourny. The selection committie does take into account major injuries for a team, if they are on the bubble. I think they still get it. This team will now live and die by the three even more than they did before.

terrible break(no pun) for Turner and the Buckeyes.

I'm no doctor, anyone know if this injury is similar at all to what Purdue's Robbie Hummel had last year?

I am interested to see how this heals and when/if he comes back this year

No he doesn't? Turner could never play another college game and still be a top 10 pick. What else does he have to prove? He has the size, athleticism, ball skills and court vision to make it on the next level. Some guys play 30 college games and go pro, ET has played 70+.

Honestly I dont see how this would come close to keep OSU out of the NCAAs. They have enough talent to get it done, easily. Turner is good, but he isnt that whole team. They have looked GREAT this season.

If OSU misses out on the NCAA (or in my eyes is even on the bubble) Matta should be fired (not really). That would be a terrible coaching job for the year.

No way they would fire Matta with the class of 2010 they have coming in. Even if they were terrible the rest of the year.

No offense Laley, but you are much smarter then this comment. Turner was averaging 20pt, 13rbs and over 6 asst per game. You don't just replace that. Turner opened up quite a bit for Diebler and Buford as well just with his presence. On top of that, OSU had to move him to the PG position because there is no one else that is "that" good.
Add in that Offut transferred, and an already thin OSU bench, just got thinner.
Now they went from having three legit guys who could score, to two legit. One is not playing well currently (Buford) and one is limited to spot up 3pt shooting.
The loss of Turner to this team is HUGE.

Look at Shaun Livingston (formerly of the Clippers). He blew out his knee in the NBA and is still not the same 5 years later. Knees and spines are both not something you want to mess with as a basketball player.

Big, but you basically said Turner is going to need 8 weeks to get over the psychological affects. You were pretty adamant that guys with broken backs (ie. Turner) would have this type of problem.

And, this is not your typical spine/knee injury. Pretty easy to fully recover with no side effects.

Turner needed to come back this year to work on his ball handling skills and outside shot. The injury when he is fully recovered and can prove it on the court will have no effect on his draft status (probably top 10 pick) His ball handling is still pretty weak as evidenced by the double digit turnover game against North Carolina, and in most other games he turns the ball over too much and still also shows limited range shooting. Despite this he should be a very good pro player and will continue to improve. He will have to play the 2 guard in the NBA so his shooting range must improve.

I'll say it again, this injury has ZERO affect on his draft status. It's not a kneee. It's something that will heal completely and he will be fine from.

As for OSU going foward, they might not even be NIT material now. Could possibly be the worst team in the Big 10 without Turner.

Turner should get Big 10 POY based soley on the fact that people will see just how important he is to this team when he's not around.

The Ankle Breaker is very sad about the loss of Turner for eight weeks. I will still be in front of the tube pulling for the Bucks but all the time knowing "what might have been."

I know how good he is. But I think people are underestimating how good this teams talent is around him. Lacking depth? Sure. Not top 3 in B10 anymore? Sure. Miss the NCAAs? Well, I just dont see that. They are still better than PSU, IU, and Iowa FOR SURE. They are not as good as MSU, Purdue, Illinois, or Wisconsin (Talent wise better, but Ryan is lightyears ahead of Matta as a in-game on the floor coach).

I think they are about on par with UofM and slightly better than Minny and Northwestern.

I guess a lot will come down to how players step up and how well Matta can adjust the offensive gameplan to suit the teams "new" strengths. I could see this team finishing 8th in the B10 at worst, but I see them closer to 5th and 6th which will be enough to make it in. (and all this is based on Turner missing or being limited all regular season long...which is not supposed to be the case as of now.)

Okay, this is a HUGE loss for this team, and they are ridiculously thin off the bench, especially at PG.

HOWEVER...to say they won't even be NIT material is really dumb. To say they could possibly be the worst team in the Big 10 is ridiculously stupid. Have you seen Iowa play? Have you seen what Michigan has done lately?

I expect them to struggle mightily and, depending on when Turner can come back and how quickly he can get back into basketball shape, I see them about breaking even in wins/losses during his absence.

If for some reason he ends up missing the entire season, then all bets are off, but I still see them getting into the NIT without any problem either way (assuming they don't find a way to make the NCAAs).

OSU is already 7-1 with two solid OOC wins.

I have them finishing at worst 20-10 without going into the B10 tournament. The committee will put OSU in with that record. This is without Turner the entire year and no upsets Purdue, Wisconsin, Butler, West Virginia, or MSU.

That's absolutely ridiculous and the most pessimistic post I have read on this subject. Turner is not Lebron James, and OSU has other players that can score. They won't be the great team that they could have been this year, but the worst team in the Big 10? No NIT? Are you serious? Kidding?... Oh I see, you just forgot to put the "j/k" after your post. That makes a lot more sense now. Ohio State will make the NCAA tournament, no problem, mark it down.

I was talking more so without Turner, and their level of play. I just don't see them as a good team without him.

However, they have won enough games up to this point, and say he misses 14 games and they split them (I don't think they will), that leaves them at 14-8 and they would have a chance to get to 20 wins.

Honestly, I think they become a bubble team and that's if Turner doesn't miss more time than expected.

However, without him, OSU will struggle mightily.
