The numbers of teams a conference puts in the Sweet 16 says nothing about the strength of a conference. Looking at the matchups will tell you something, but it is also a small part of the whole season. The Big Ten is only going to have 2 teams in the Sweet 16, but Purdue is the only team that had a poor showing, the rest of the teams all showed up and played well. And there is no question that the Big Ten is either the best or second best conference in the country this year. The Big East was overrated when people would talk about it being so much better than everyone else, but it was still a top 2 league.

I said that when they had the record of 8 teams last year as well. Then the NCAA decided to add 3 teams to the postseason and decided, "Fuck it! We'll just put 3 more Big East teams in to make this selection Sunday easy."

If there are 11 teams from 1 conference with the same records and resumes that the Big East teams had this year, there will be 11 again.

Yeah they would do it again easily. The east coast isn't really all that into college football, but they're huge into college basketball. The NCAA doesn't forget about the almighty dollar just because it's a single elimination tournament rather than bowl games. They're still concerned about the money.

If they keep expanding the tournament, you will definitely see it again. If conferences keep merging (going into the future a bit here), you may see it again.

Would the Big East have any teams left in the tournament if two of them didn't get to advance by beating other Big East teams?

IMO, Marquette appears to be the only team that looks like they give a damn.

i think the fighting kemba's would get there. other than that, this tournament has pretty much been a disaster for the big east. pitt, notre dame (this could change if the domers can mount a huge rally), louisville and syracuse really have no excuse for not being in the sweet 16

Now the talking heads on ESPN are saying the Big East doesn't play much defense. I agree with them and wish I'd heard that or figured it out on my own before filling out my bracket. 326 players in the contest I'm in - guarantee you I'm in the bottom 10%.

thing is..tey all had pretty good records so it is hard to say they not justifiied. what I hate is teams like Penn St getting in.....not a good record...and MSU...seriously.....come on. Thsoe two did not need to be in the tourny......

I think PSU was a fine pick...and without the David Jackson injury, I think they are still playing. I know its all speculative, but hey...prove me wrong:D:D

Jeff Brooks is the one who got injured. Jackson played 39 minutes.

Consider yourself proven :)

What were they, like 16-13 before teh big ten tourney? I just dont think taht is a good enough record to make it, I really dont. Dont give me the strength of schedule issue.....I just think that a regular season with taht record does not deserve to be in.

On paper, the BE was justified in getting 11 teams in the tourny. Realistically speaking, one could argue for a team or two to replace them (Colorado or Alabama), but realistically speaking those teams weren't going to go anywhere in this tourny either. Following the teams in the conference, I knew however that Georgetown and Nova were on the trend downwards and should not have been invited; record, SOS and RPI be damned. Also following the teams in the conference as close as I have I knew there was no great teams in the conference, just a large number of quality teams. The BE and schools in it will bounce back.

Says something that the 9th and 11th best teams in the conference are the two remaining. A LOT of quality teams. Some there were capable of doing great things, but also capable of stumbling. Pains me, thought my Irish would prove such wrong.

Some validation for admitting 11 teams (I pulled this from ESPN 1530's website)

Record vs BCS teams in non-league play
Big East 29-16 (.644)
Big 12: 25-20 (.555)
ACC: 24-27 (.470)
Big 10: 17-20 (.459)
Pac 10: 12-19 (.387)
SEC: 19-24 (.441)

(Andy Glockner, SI)

The Big Least?
26 regular season/non-conference wins over NCAA field
UConn beat: Texas, Kentucky, Michigan St
West Virginia beat: Purdue, Vandy, Oakland
Syracuse beat: Michigan St, Michigan
St John's beat: Duke
Pitt beat: Texas
Notre Dame beat: Wisconsin, Gonzaga, Georgia
Louisville beat: Butler, UNLV
Cincinnati beat: Xavier
Georgetown beat: Missouri, ODU, Wofford, Utah State, Memphis
Villanova beat: UCLA, Temple, Bucknell, Boston U.
Marquette beat: Bucknell

----

All this being said, again I agree the BE has failed to show up in the tournament.

I've said it all along, the Big East is at worst the second best conference in the country. The Big Ten and them are neck and neck, and I think you have to give the edge to the Big Ten, based solely on tournament success.

Big Ten 2/7 teams in the SS
Big East 2/11 teams in the SS

If you're gonna go off tourney success, wouldn't the best conference be the ACC with 3 out of 4 teams in the SS?

Not a shot in the dark. The ACC is a soccerball conference. See Anson Dorrance. According to most here, Florida State is just a Cinderella. Like Weber State in 1999.

That said, I will be the first to tell you that this was the worst the conference has been in maybe decades. But, there is certainly a lot of quality basketball still being played, and Duke, North Carolina and Florida State are proving that by constituting the most populated Sweet 16 by a single conference this season. I think FSU's drop-kicking of Ben Hansbrough and Notre Dame is one of the more impressive performances of the tourney.
