New thread worthy? I'd say so.
Right thing to do should have done it in the first place. They gonna need an extra press box in the shoe for the suspendees.

I think it has a decent shot of doing so. The university has always been pretty transparent regarding violations (compared to other big programs), and Tressel is at least owning up to it, even though he fucked up pretty bad. They don't look good, but they have handled it decent.

The only way they come over the top now is if they drill Pearl with something, and feel necessary to on Tressel for the sake of consistency.

Tressel cares too much about his image. He should have told all the MF's to go pound salt, and left it up to his boss and the NCAA. If the NCAA wants to hit him harder then he should take it 'cause it goes with the job. They make the rules...434 pages worth. Tressel doesn't need to self flagellate. NCAA compliance has enough whips.

Just sayin'.

Save for the financial ramifications, Tressel's 5 games suspension is way worse than Pearl's 8 game suspension. Not to mention, Pearl's case is littered with lying and deception.

Pearl came clean on his own though. They're not that far apart when it's all said and done.

He only admitted it after he lied, after he tried to get others to lie for him, and it was obvious that the lie wasn't going to work any longer. Not to mention there were other NCAA violations that him and his staff committed that weren't related to that BBQ. Add to the fact the whole Lane Kiffin ordeal(and baseball violations), and I think Tressel's and Pearl's situations are very different.

You bet they are completely different. But more importantly NCAA punishments are way over the top for the supposed crimes.....and it cost the Universities tons of money. Ohio State has 9 people to pay just to handle the NCAA compliance paperwork. The compliance rulebook is 434 pages long and reads like a Russian novel. Some 18 year old kid screws up and you have a whole dog and pony show complete with drama and press conferences and mea culpa's and suspension and fines reaching into 6 or 7 figures. For what the OSU State players did, a 1 game suspension and repayment of the money to an approved charity would have been more than sufficient. Overly harsh penalties only increase the stakes and lead to the tangled webs of complicity that turn normally good individuals into cheats and liars.

The NCAA has to get a grip on reality and get over itself as judge and executioner. Keep the penalties reasonable and suitable for the 'violation' and the circumstances and a lot of this goes away without unfairness or putting anyone at a competitive disadvatage.

I just question how sincere he is by suspending himself for 5 games. He only did so when it was known that the players couldn't get their 5 games reduced. If they reduced it to 2 games, would he have stayed at 2 games?

This just makes it look like damage control. The NCAA could very well come down harder than the 5 games/250k, only because he is viewed as a leader and should be held to a higher standard.

I like it. If he is suspended a whole year, then so be it.
I've basically accepted next year is a wash. I'd be extremely happy with a New Year's Bowl game.
I really expect them to lose at least 2 of those 5 and have at least 3 loses by the end of the year.

To me it looks like a coach/school trying to head off the NCAA from looking too deep by hoping they'll accept the self-imposed sanctions. If I'm the NCAA, an eyebrow was just raised.

Bruce Pearl wasn't, he was suspended for 25% of Tennessee's games, Tressel is now suspended for almost 40 % of Ohio State games.

Yeah, but we all know that makes no difference when it comes to NCAA sanctions. They have no consistency whatsoever it seems.
