I think this is causing a lot of confusion for everyone.

The guy that the OSU players were selling their stuff to was a suspect in the drug trafficking case. The players, themselves, were not suspected of drug trafficking, but they were associated with someone who was. Does that make sense?

There aren't any more facts ewok. No players were involved in drugs of any kind. The NCAA will certainly understand the conflict JT was faced with in reporting "their" violations and a confidentiality request in a federal investigation. That's all this thing is.

FACTS:
Ohio State is currently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the best public university in Ohio, among the top 130 universities in the world, among the top 60 universities in the United States, and among the top 20 public universities in the United States

And all that information you just gave makes them the BEST, NUMBER 1.

Also, have been in a better job for a year and a half.

So, facts are against you in that case too.

Wouldn't Federal gov't trump NCAA? I don't see how Tress can get in trouble when ordered not to tell by the feds.

ironman02;704012 wrote:Tressel receives e-mail in April from an attorney telling him of a drug trafficking case involving the tattoo parlor guy. Some of Tressel's players are mixed up in this because they're selling memorabilia to this guy, but they're NOT involved in the drug trafficking.

In December, the U.S. Attorney General tells OSU that their players were selling their items to the tattoo guy. The TatGate investigation ensues. Tressel knew about the selling of the items but didn't report it because there was an ongoing federal investigation.

In January, OSU, while dealing with the appeals process for TatGate, becomes aware of the information that Tressel witheld and brings in the NCAA to help with the matter.

Yesterday, Yahoo sports leaks the information about OSU/NCAA investigation that began in January. Because of the leak, OSU holds a press conference to address the matter.

OSU isn't just now punishing Tressel because he was outed by Yahoo. They have been dealing with this since January, but some dumbass leaked it to Yahoo.

Tressel is in the wrong, but OSU wasn't trying to cover anything up. They have been working with the NCAA to resolve the matter since they actually became aware of it. Tressel apparently was concerned with disrupting a federal investigation, but he still should have said something.

Does that about cover it? Some of the posts on this thread make me wonder if anyone actually listened to what was said.

But what were they doing that warranted them being part of the investigation? Selling stuff to him is not illegal. It's only an NCAA violation. The feds don't give 2 shits about it.

The bottom line is that they picked the wrong shop to sell their shit to. If it would of been anybody else nobody would of had a clue about any of this just like every other big program.

IF it went down the way Tress claims, I don't blame him. Give me a NCAA sanction over a Federal felony charge any day. What if Tress forwards the emails to Smith, he forwards to the compliance dept., someone in compliance leaks it, and it gets back to the subjects of the investigation?? The NCAA means very little in the grand scheme of a Federal investigation.

The impression I got was that it was the defense attorney who sent the e-mail, not a federal prosecutor. In that case, Tressel has no obligation to confidentiality.

I can see where he's coming from still. But to not even notify Gee, Smith, or at least one of OSU's lawyers, was incredibly stupid. It gives the impression that he just hoped the whole thing would blow over and didn't want to risk unnecessarily reporting a violation.

IT'S AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION THAT REQUIRES CONFIDENTIALITY. It doesn't mean they're involved.Period.

Yeah, I don't think he was actually ordered to keep quiet about the fed investigation. I think it was more of Tress' decision.

When you package everything OSU brings you can argue as being one of the best universities in the world. A clear #1? No.

I'm talking academics, athletics, research, alumni, REVENUE.
