I take it as a lawyer involved with the fed investigation was doing Tress a solid with his email alerting him that hey this shop is in trouble and your players were selling their stuff to the one in trouble. That is going to come out but for the mean time you can't say anything keep it confidential. That is just my take folks.

Depends on who Tress could trust. IMO, he should have told Gene Smith. I think he's pretty safe to trust.

And this is WHY I believe the NCAA won't do anything further. I think Tressel was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. We'll see. Whether or not the NCAA will understand......time will tell.

If that turns out to be the case.....I agree.....it's a done deal and over with regarding the NCAA. The public opinion of Tressel most likely took a pretty big hit today though.

I'm not a betting man and would bet the house on it. It's a lock.

Here's the deal. I see a lot of people being on one hand defensive of JT and other people being over critical. I am sure a lot of the opinions are based on where your biases lie. Here's my 2 cents, and my opinion applies to not just JT, but anyone else in his situation.

If Tressel received an email from a federal attorney regarding an investigation he should have consulted with OSU's legal counsel. As an agent of the university, he had an obligation to ensure the best interests of OSU were being met. Any discussion he would have had with OSU's legal counsel would have been privileged, meaning what was discussed between the two was not discoverable in a court of law. Legal counsel could have guided him in the process of what he can and cannot disclose to the NCAA, the players and/or anyone else. Any concern about disrupting/interfering with the federal investigation would have been alleviated.

Then why would Tress get an email that held him to confidentiality?

Tough situation for JT to be in. I think the only people he could have went to would have been the schools lawyers.

The public opinion that scorn him for this isn't worthy of note imo. Ill informed and looking for reasons to crucify.

If it stopped at Gene Smith, OSU would be in the same boat. It either stays with Tress or it goes all the way to the top.

Not in my eyes. If he was taking a hit for the players, I have no issue with that. IF what was mentioned in presser is true. Personally, i am relieved it wasn't something like recruiting violations, booster dealings, academic wrong doing, etc, etc. No, its not good. But it could have been worse..and I was expecting the worst. Again, not making an excuse. But there were certainly some complexities involved with a federal investigation, a lawyer asking for confidentiality and possible risk to his players. I am sure it will all play out in the next few days when details emerge.

Why was the e-mail sent if it was confidential though? That doesn't make much sense to me. Tressel wasn't involved with the case at all, even if his players were, therefore, the attorney shouldn't have informed Tressel of anything. Something is missing IMO.

First of all he wasn't told by the feds to keep anything quiet. He was contacted by an attorney who will probably be disbarred or reprimanded about an on going federal investigation and given details about the case. The attorney was the one in the wrong here and Tressel never should have known before the investigation and trial were over in December. However, he should have outed the attorney told the feds and NCAA and blew the whole thing up. He didn't, was more concerned about the players being in trouble. At the end of the investigation its turns out they just sold shit the the tattoo parlor and committed no crimes. Tressel was put in a tough situation. I'm not sure what I would have done. Read the OSU statement to the NCAA before you post anymore shit on this forum.

Probably. But, does he cover himself some by telling his boss? It would have allowed them to take action sooner on their end. Would have kept them in front of the problem instead of reacting later.

No I think the lawyer was trying to do Tress a favor and provide him with some information about his players that would come out of this and instead it did more harm!

Because if Tressel tipped that these guys were in trouble prior to them being released of any drug business, it could have tipped off tattoo guy and fucked their case.
