I think some of the guys who were commenting saying that Easton is "Ghetto" understand what a ghetto is, seeing as how they live in the Hilltop.2kool4skool;676812 wrote: Probably because most people who regularly visit Easton have no concept of what a "ghetto" is.
It's honestly a nice mall dropped into a ghetto. Section 8 housing, crime, etc. Mifflin area has never been nice.Just to be clear, I by no means think you're racist. I just think you're off in thinking Easton is anywhere near "ghetto" status. I regularly walk back to my car from Easton at night, and have never felt the least bit in danger. Are there lower class people hanging around there? Sure. But that doesn't make it "a ghetto."
Like the Mifflin area? Exactly where Easton is...I suppose it's just semantics, but I'd reserve a term like "ghetto" for somewhere other than a nice shopping mall in Columbus, Ohio.

There's really no point in arguing about this. We clearly have different ideas about what a "ghetto" constitutes. I've been in areas where I was legitimately concerned for my safety being there, and an upscale shopping mall in Columbus doesn't quite fit that bill. There's a difference between some kids stealing the GPS from your car and "a ghetto."

How bout regular arrests and people getting shot, little bit different than neighbourhood shenanigans. Easton during the day is very nice, it is not nearly as nice at night. There are some bad people that loiter around Easton area at night

Rule of thumb: If there's a Pottery Barn in sight, you aren't in the ghetto.gport_tennis;676927 wrote:How bout regular arrests and people getting shot, little bit different than neighbourhood shenanigans. I wouldn't call Easton itself "ghetto" any more than I would call Bexley "ghetto".
However, as LJ very accurately points out, the ghetto isn't very far away - and it's getting closer every year. As the area around downtown Columbus gentrifies, the lowest-income inhabitants in the area are being pushed north along SR 3 toward Westerville. As Easton is the only shopping center within easy reach of the area, the residents are naturally going to be drawn there.
If only for financial considerations, I would not buy (as a long-term residence) a house inside the area circled by I-71 on the west, I-270 on the north and east, and I-670 on the south.

there are bad areas all over Columbus. I don't think the area right around the mall is what you would consider "ghetto" but go a block to the north or south and itstarts to get a little sketchy

I work there till late at night and trust me the place becomes a zoo after dark on the weekends. All the lil hoodlums from the surronding ghettos go there to loiter or "hang out". If I had teenage children it's definently not a place I would want them hanging around.

That's probably the best way to put it. While the mall itself may not be ghetto all the time, the ghetto comes to the mall at night.

Isn't every city in America more dangerous or more ghetto late at night?
As for the Columbus Malls seem to last about 20 years statement......good observation.....Easton has how many years left? It's still pretty popular.

Yes. But you don't expect 50 person brawls and such at 10pm at a place like EastonIronman92;677038 wrote:Isn't every city in America more dangerous or more ghetto late at night?
I think the recession slowed things down. The funny thing is in the late 80's the Northland Chamber of Commerce laughed at the thought of Northland mall EVER dying. Time changes everything, but we will need to see another economic boom before the malls move again. As for the Columbus Malls seem to last about 20 years statement......good observation.....Easton has how many years left? It seems more extreme up around Easton. Most places that are shitty at night aren't all too desirable in the day either, and Easton really doesn't fit that bill (yet).

Easton is actually really really nice during the day. A few of us went over to the Tinder Box and Chipotle one afternoon and the lot right there was full of BMW's, Mercedes, Lexuses, etc.

Any time I came up from Athens it was always late afternoon/early evening. I didn't see any lots full of Beamers, and it wasn't shady by any means either. But it always seemed quite nice.
It's amazing what happens when the sun goes down.

I'm not completely certain that the days of constant outward expansion are going to come back, at least in the midwest. We don't have a growing population that needs new land - and the hot real estate in Columbus and several other cites are the areas in and around the center city (the Grandview area, Vic Village/Harrison West, Old Town East, German Village, etc. These areas lend themselves to neighborhood strips vs versus huge malls. Gas going to $5.00 a gallon in another five years will only accelerate this trend.LJ;677044 wrote:Yes. But you don't expect 50 person brawls and such at 10pm at a place like Easton

Then again, I can't see The Bottoms and Franklinton EVER becoming trendy..

The problem with Easton is that Cota runs there. Go to Polaris where there's no buses running and you don't have those problems. I was shopping at Easton before Christmas and left the hubby at Adobe Gilas because if he sees the little bastards running around acting all tough like they do, he'd make some inappropriate smart ass comments to them and we'd probably get shanked on our way to the car.

Dublin.

No the problem is that Easton, like all contemporary American shopping centers, is just a glorified strip mall. Easton is a destination, not a community and thus the decay happens 1000x as fast when the next thing pops up.power i;677850 wrote:The problem with Easton is that Cota runs there. Dublin has unveiled a 50-year plan to create a mixed-use center where people can live too. I know Easton has its townhouses, but it's just like Levis Commons in Toledo and I'm sure elsewhere. It would succeed unless you get upper-middle class people to live in a walkable mixed-use community.
It would help to close the stores these ghetto thugnasties want to be at by like 6:00 if the problem is truly bad.

They hang around the movie theater, so that wouldn't really work. They don't go to the stores, they just come to "see a movie" and hang around the mall.

Well loitering is illegal. Fine their asses. Toledo has a similar problem with their Franklin Park.
It's private property, make some freakin' rules.

they have rules. No unescorted teens after 8:30 PM, no groups over 4 and no loitering. Like I said though, they hire as many CPD as they possibly can and they cannot control the problems.

Christ, his own brother shot him? And it's only felonious assault if you shoot someone in the head and they live?
