Sullingers is WITHOUT QUESTION the go to guy on this team. If its crunch time, they will look to go to him, and its not even in question. That being said...he is a post player and its not always easy to get the ball into him. Guys like Lighty, Deibler and Buford are fully capable, and already have hit big shot after big shot as well. But make no mistake, Sullinger is OPTION #1.

No question, and with confidence. Tied at NW with 12 seconds to go and a couple time outs you bring the ball up the floor and send it in to Sully under the rack, make the shot or get hacked and go to the line...no time out required.

I have a feeling my definition of "go-to" guy is a little different from others. Is Sullinger "option #1", absolutely. But to me, that does not make him the "go to" guy.

To me, guys like Kemba Walker or Jimmer are go to guys. In a late game situation, they're taking the shot, pretty much no matter what.

In OSU's case, I don't think Sully is taking the shot, no matter what. This team does an outstanding job of sharing the ball. If Sully's got somebody on his back deep in the post, i'm sure they're giving him the ball. But if someone has a favorable match-up, then I could see the Bucks going to someone other than Sully. Just my opinion.

It's different when you compare a post and a guard as "go to guys". Guards have the ball in their hands so much more and it's a lot easier for them to make plays. Sullinger is at the mercy of others on the team to get him the ball. Plus, it's much easier to keep the ball out of a post players hands.

So late in a game, maybe it's harder to get Sullinger the ball, but don't think that OSU doesn't want to.

OSU wants to get the ball to anyone that is open at the end of the game. That is the main difference between this team and past teams. They aren't going to force it to someone because they feel that player is the only one who can make the play, they are a team and trust each other to take that final shot.

Sure looked like they were trying to force the ball (successfully) into Sully's hands in some of the games listed in this thread (NW, Penn State, etc.)...

If he was truly their main "go to" guy, they would get him the ball somewhere, anywhere, and let him create his own shot. Rather, the team plays the game the same way the play the other 18-19 minutes and takes what is open.

What?

I'm saying in the PSU, NW, etc. games they forced it into him...in some of the games you say he didn't touch the ball, it was because they couldn't get him the ball. It's not like they weren't looking.

There is no etc. Those are the only close games that he even made a shot within the final few possesions of the game. They look for everyone. I think that is what you are not understanding. They don't go out and say "ok, let's go out and run this play just so we can get Sully open because he is the only one that can do it" like they did with Turner last year. This year they go out thinking "let's run this play and whoever gets open gets the ball"

Look, I am not saying that Sully is not probably the best on the team. I am saying that OSU does not rely on 1 player to make shots and make things happen like they did with Turner. To me that is the "go to" guy. The guy who you get the ball to no matter what because you count on him to make those plays and score those points. The way this team plays, they do not have that player, nor do they need that player. In play by plays from last year, the final minutes of close games will read "turner turner turner turner turner". This year it reads like "Lighty, Diebler, Sullinger, Craft, Buford". They spread the ball around all game, and don't change that at the end of the game because they feel like they can only count on 1 player.

No one is saying other players on the team are not capable of hitting the big shot..just saying that OSU looks to him first to make that shot. Granted, I will admit I haven't watched everyone of OSU's games, but the ones I have watched (basically their "bigger" games usually broadcasted on ESPN, CBS, and occasionally BTN) it just seemed like they have tried to get it into him for the big shot. I could be wrong, I don't know. Just my observations.

I disagree,he works to try to get open, but they try to get it to the player with the best look. Huge difference between last year's team and this year's team. The analysts on 610 talk about it all the time that there is no guy on this team that they have to rely on like they did last year.

the bottom line is is that Sullinger wants that last shot--he makes himself available so that his teammates can get him the ball--and this is what makes him, IMO, OSU's "go to" player

As do the other players..... Personally, I see them as a team, not as a bunch of players around 1 "go to" guy.

5 seconds left, OSU down by 2. Do they throw it in to Sully who is being double teamed and hope he can make something happen on his own, or is the ball passed to Diebler, Lighty, Buford, Craft who has a chance at a 15 ft'r?

I promise you they do not force it to Sully.

Last year, replace Sully with Turner, and they force it to him. IMO that is the big difference between a "go to" guy and a team that plays as a team.

I tend to agree, but if I had to choose one player, it'd be Sullinger...again, the kid seems to want the ball in that situation a little more than the others--and again, this is just my perception.

I see Lighty (usually) and Craft being right up there. Buford and Diebs right behind. Personally, I think not having a guy that the team HAS to rely on is what will take them far in the tourney. How did having to rely on Turner work out in the tourney? Not well.

no doubt about it, and I've maintained all along that their unselfishness and chemistry is instrumental to their success...but still, with the game hanging in the balance, I want the ball in Sullinger's hands ;)

Last seconds of the game, the only reason Sullinger would be double teamed (which is likely) is because opposing coaches are not stupid. They know OSU wants to get the ball to Sullinger. By him being double teamed, it proves he's their go to guy.

Actually, i am not. If you watch the games, you will see I am not. this team plays as a team. They do not rely on 1 player. To say they do is stupid and is hoping that this team fails. Look what happened when they relied solely on the NPOY last year? Didn't get them very far. They all rely on each other, not just 1 guy. This is 5 players, not 1 player and 4 guys.

Didn't get them very far last year? They overachieved and made the Elite 8. They had a great year last year.

No they didn't. They made it to the Sweet 16 and relied on 1 player.

then why are you debating me when I said that they don't rely on 1 player and decide to call me clueless? To me "go to" means the 1 player that they will always rely on when things are down. OSU does not do that, and THAT is not debateable. I never said he wasn't probably the best player on the team or that he isn't a major part of the offense.

Actually, you don't, because I don't think that at all. People are trying to argue with me when I said that OSU is not one dimensional and do not rely on 1 player during crunch time. Any one of the players could get the ball and make the shot. Last year that was not the case, it was the Evan Turner show.
