I don't think we'll see any upsets this week.
Hell, I don't think we've had any yet...maybe Ritt/Chip?...Nah.
I haven't been to every game this season but it sounds like the best WCAL game so far has been the 16-14 Huskies/Dawgs contest.
Easily the best game I've seen this year is Mogadore/Smithville, but that's only half WCAL.
You know it's not a real exciting year when all the close games were by the bottom half of the league.
On the Falcons/Huskies matchup-
The Falcons will win by multiple TDs, I personally don't even consider this a rivalry as the Huskies only real rival is Black River ( estimate:15-20% of BR students have West Salem addresses.) If the districts even touch, it's 2 cows staring at each other over a barbwire fence somewhere south of New Pittstucky.
Hillsdale also, for some reason gets an inordinate amount of hate from the Wayne countians (the farther east, the worse it is). They have gotten very little credit for their 7-0 season thus far while Smithville has been regaled for a 5-2 effort. Like both Bloody and I say..."All the Falcons do is win and get told they got lucky and shouldn't have."
I love the Huskies, but they're young and paying dues, and another payment will be made on Friday. Hillsdale isn't gonna overlook Northwestern.

I dont think anyone thinks the Falcons have been lucky, I think what most people are pointing out is that the schedual they play has been very weak! the proof of that is the standings in the regions. I have no personal gripe with the Falcons, I think Coach Williams and the players over there have turned this program around. Having watched them over the last couple of years, I have to say, they are not a strong as they were last year, but they are still a good team.

Since we were talking about Div. I scholarships last night...I know it's not football, but I want to say congrats to Lance Horner.
According to the Daily Record:
"Horner became the first Rittman boys athlete to get a Div. I scholarship in two decades when he verbally committed to accept a baseball offer from Youngstown State Monday."

I dont know of any hate for Hillsdale out of Norwayne. I personally respect what they've done over the past several years. As of right now they are still the WCAL champs and will remain until someone knocks them off. In addition to that I think they have the best coach in the area

RedRum the game with Smithville/Northwestern last week sounded like a barnburner...if Smithies dont jump out 21-0 in the 1st quarter...Huskies win that game.
Red...There is no hate for Hillsdale from this guy. Im happy to see that program getting the Coaching and kids and having success. I wondered all my life why could Hillsdale, (as well as Norwayne, Chippewa NWN) NOT field respectable teams. These schools had the athletes and experienced success in other sports...just not football. Norwayne had some good seasons, but Maltarich layed a foundation and Harbour extended that to build the Bobcats into a reputable program...and its not going to stop this year!
Chippewa turned the corner at the turn of the century...but regressed.
Thut BUILT NWN....
Williams had put Hillsdale on the map....and they are here to stay!!!
The days of "THE BIG 3" in the WCAL are over......but the new regimes have a LOT of catching up to do. Cant live in the past though...gotta play the games and build the future. Nobody cares about the title from 1985 or 2010 (or any other year, unless perhaps you were on one of those teams and have good memories) ....people care about the title THIS year!!!! Although I guess 2010 was pretty monumental for Hillsdale!!!
I do think that Schrock may have the horses and size and knowledge that if he scores 1st or keeps the game close with Norwayne....the kids could get rattled, it will be a test to their character as to how they can deal with adversity.
On the same note, I think Hillsdale has the athletes, size, balance and Coaching to do the same.
However, if Norwayne jumps out...and it turns into a track meet....NORWAYNE has a very fine TEAM and with all due respect, has the full ability to run the table and make a DEEP playoff run.
Its been quiet....Im kinda leary to post.....but lol, why not.
Wrestling starts November 10th.

The rain is supposed to stop by noon tomorrow, how does a wet track effect the big games Friday night? Another factor, do the WCAL schools have class tomorrow? I know both Wooster and Triway are off for teacher in service. Seeing that events like those change a team's game day routine, does that have any bearing on the games tomorrow night?

Everybody on here knows I'm a Northwestern guy. However, I have never been one to go to all 10 husky games guy (even in the power years 05-07). I've always hit a bunch of different games (WCAL, OCC, etc). The reason I made the statement about "hate" for Hillsdale is I've heard it alot in the last 5-6 years.
Now "hate" may be a strong word, maybe "resentment" is better but its been noticeable since the Falcons started winning. I often hear stuff like:
-they aren't even in Wayne County, they shouldn't be in this league.
-traveling way out there is horrible, it's to far from Wayne County
-they're kids don't even attend the same career center, they should play in Loudonvilles league
Funny thing is, I never heard this stuff when Hillsdale was an easy "W" on everyones schedule. Now that the balance of power has changed, I hear it. All of you are welcome to disagree with me but it's the truth as I know it. I also know not everyone feels that way but thats the kind of "off the cuff" we just got beat by Hillsdale remarks that are made out of frustration these days.
It's really not a big deal, I didn't realize it would generate any comments. It's just my personal experience.

Not exactly sure when, but it is probably to due to the fact that they have a lot of students in who live in Wayne . And I agree with Red Rum, If Hillsdale weren't doing so good we wouldn't be hearing half of these commentsBEARIDER;932771 wrote:How did hillsdale end up in the WCAL? And when?

I have a copy of an Ashland Times Gazzette artical that was recently sent to Coach Williams dated April 24, 1989 by sports editor Steve Eighinger. The title is "Now is time for Hillsdale to exit WCL" at the time Hillsdale had been approached about rejoining the Firelands Conferance. The article is quite lengthy but some of the high points:
"The board will ultimately decide whether or not the school withdraws from the WCL- or continue to commit athletic suicide."
"There is no earthly reason Hillsdale should remain a member of the WCL. The school is the laughing stook of the WCL- especially in football, the perennial doormat, the school everyone schedules for Homecoming and an easy victory."
"Our kids don't even envision winning championships, says one Hillsdale coach, who said he doesn't mind his name being used. I do however, because I have also been told his job (and others) could be on the line if they speak out too much on the subject."
The article has many quotes from coaches about how they can not compete in the WCL. It also talks about the size differences in the schools and how Hillsdale being a rural school verses more community type schools put it at a disadvantage.
Thank God, Hillsdale now has people that believe they can compete and can instill that belief in young people.

Hillsdale joined the WCAL in 1970 when Triway left. According to the article mentioned in my previous post, the reason was because at the time Hillsdale had a good basketball program and wanted stiffer competition to prepare them for playoffs.

I'll be DEAD HONEST....Im one of those guys that made such statements. It has/had nothing to do with their recent success....it was more based on the lack of success in the sports of my interest, Football and wrestling. (some good wrestlers have come outta there including 2x state champ Mike Glass). It was also based on not wanting to drive/ride out there. LOL
Let it be known that Hillsdales 1st victory EVER against Waynedale was 1988.
Some of the comments you listed were also some of my complaints...being the WCAL....(its really irrelevant).

I disagree....with the football success and the BB and softball success...some good wrestlers consistantly....Im happy to have Hillsdale stay. I would like to see the wrestling program addressed next, as the football program is in good hands. In all honesty...the best competition we have locally, the better it prepares us on a statewide level. That has ALOT to do with why Waynedale travels so much during wrestling season....to try and see different, solid competition.
