I sing with Seattle Men's Chorus, the largest gay organization in the Pacific Northwest. Last night we started preparing for our spring concerts that will present music of the Weimar period in Germany between the two world wars. This was a very liberal period for Germany. Gays and lesbians were really out and about and they had a lot of freedom. Then the Nazis took over and threw 100,000 of our people into concentration camps. Most did not survive.

Someone in my group asked if America is about to go through the same turmoil. The past few years have been very kind to gays in America, especially with the cancellation of Don't Ask Don't Tell. We are experiencing the same euphoria that German gays and lesbians felt around 1930. Is it possible that it could all come crashing down on our heads? Could our society become so conservative that gays will have to hide in the closet again?

I personally don't see this happening, but the idea does scare me. I just have to wonder how far the tea partiers and the other conservatives will go.

No realistic chance. It's about as likely as the US banning guns or starting pretextual wars of aggression or persecuting some ethno-religious minority on trumped up charges.

Oh, wait . . .

I would doubt this, but only because I think that the two party system has created such blind allegiance to its respective sides that there will never be an overwhelming majority of the population gathering behind a single mindset like that.

In a sense, the flaws of the two party system and the vehement division of the country over social rights issues (both I would consider to be bad things) have this as an upside.

Give me a break. My father in law is gay (and he's 62 years old), the following is a recount of the instances of discrimination he's faced:

Does the Seattle Men's Chorus have dress rehearsals?

There is a possibility that he's a sock and not really gay and is trying just to get a reaction, practically every negative stereotype about gay men (particularly the narcissism, false victimhood and general "all about me" attitude) is present in this post.

Then again, it DOES remind me if something my father in law would say! Guy has lived the most privileged life of anyone I've known, yet still thinks the world is out to get him even though he was the one that came close to ruining people's lives.

Apparently the DADT thread fell too far and FWK thought there was need for another gay thread.

No, it won't happen and to be honest this thread really reaks of what my first line suggests.

I'm not saying you did this narcissistically for sure, but it sure smells like it.

This blog is not exactly overwhelmed with gay threads. One more will not hurt anyone's tender sensibilities.

At any rate, I already said that I don't believe this problem will happen. But some of my friends think it might, so that's why I brought it up. I think this country is about to go through a period of wild conservatism, and I just wonder how it will affect us. No, the government is not going to throw us into concentration camps, but the voters could make things uncomfortable for us. Very recently the voters in Arkansas voted to prevent gays and lesbians from adopting children. I happen to know a lot of gays who have adopted, and they make fine parents.

Agree.

Look at the most recent events and which side of the political spectrum lied and lied and lied to try and score political points.

It wasn't the conservatives.

The group that disrupts funerals and weddings is Fred Phelps and his Baptists. I hope they're the ones who see the backlash.

I think FWK's friend has a good point. I truly DO believe that all conservative democrats, republicans, and non-public servants are going to start meeting in situation rooms. They are then going to plot, plan and conspire catastrophic legislation that will prohibit the lifestyle they have grown accustomed to. I also believe that they're gonna put a tax on being gay. And I don't think that they'll stop there either. There will be cities specifically designated, by law, where only gays can live, no straights; and to that effect, all other cities will be legislated to be gay-free.
After a period of some 50 years or so, the belt will have been so constricted that our government(s) are going to start "exterminating" those gay cities and use them to dump nuclear waste once they are empty of human inhabitants.
I can see it!

FWK,

No offense, but your banter here reeks of someone who lives in an isolated community. There are many different examples of isolated community. A isolated community could be a community made up entirely of white christians. However, n your particular case, it is in the pacific northwest which has a very large liberal, gay population. While there are a large number of people who disagree with homosexuality for a variety of reasons (religious, moral, principal, etc.), there is no ground swell in this country to physically harm homosexuals. There may be some groups like Fred Phelps but you have to bear in mind this is a very small percentage of the population (probably less than a few thousand people). People just want to voice their disagreement without being called a bigot or a homophobe.

Over the past five centuries, we gays have been persecuted by Christians (burning at the stake; more recently imprisonment), Muslims (executions), Nazis (concentration camps), communists (the gulag), and just about every other recognizable group. Is it any wonder that we are paranoid? It has only been a few short decades since gays and lesbians had to register with the police in the United States. I think we've grown to the point where we don't trust anybody.

No you've grown to the point that you've entered into the "no one gives a shit that you're gay" society, and expect more attention.

I don't care who you sleep with, what you do in your bedroom, how you do it, or when you do it. It doesn't make you special, and you aren't subject to any more hardships in life than the person next to you. They just don't constantly gripe about it and expect everyone to celebrate what you do on your own time.
