Years ago I'd attend 4th of July parties which involved a mixture of things like pistols, SKS rifles, bon fires, fireworks and lots of alcohol.....and other stuff. It's just my opinion many CCW members do not use their weapons only for protection, and don't necessarily only fire it at actual firing ranges.
I guess it's just a certain stereotype to me for people who think CCW is necessary for protection.

(edit) Another opinion- ever since CCW I sure do notice more road signs shot up.....at least here in the rural farm land.

Not meaning to offend anyone.

God Bless America

well the signs where i live have been shot up my entire life, so the CCW did not affect that.

What percentage of murders are from guns?

What does it matter? The number of murders in the UK went up after guns were banned

I'm lumping together CCW holders with those types of people who are Pro-NRA gun lovers and occasionally do not follow the laws of handing a fire arm. I believe those two organizations attract the same type of individual.

Champaign County has it's group titled- "Unorganized Militia of Champaign County" The fact they advertise themselves as not being "gun nuts" I think is funny.

I am an NRA member and a Buckeye Firearms member, what does that make me?

This is about the third stat you've posted without providing a link to where you got your information from. I'm beginning to feel that you're just making things up.

Nope.

Don't get me wrong. I would, except my only current firearm is a 12-gauge shotgun, and carrying that around would:

(a) suck, and
(b) not be "conceiling it."

This link uses the statistic "kill." It doesn't show how many were unprovoked murders v. self-defense v. accident, etc.

Moreover, I like statistics.

According to the VPC link in LJ's post, there have been 282 kills since May 2007 by CCW holders. If we go by the 30,000-per-year stat for total gun deaths, that puts us at approximately 77,500 gun deaths since the end of May 2007.

So, 282 CCW gun deaths ... 77,500 overall gun deaths ... which means that CCW owners account for approximately 0.36% of the deaths since May 2007.

I'd be curious what the statistic would be for unregistered firearm deaths.

IMO unregistered guns is 1000000000000000000x more of a problem than too many people registering for CCW.

for the people who did get the CCW were you surprised at how close the target was for the shooting range part? i wasn't expecting a target shooting competition, but i expected 15-25 yds. when i got back to the range and saw that target 10 ft away i was like hell yeah (the gun i tested with, a LCP .38) is wildly inaccurate at 25 yds (at least it is with me shooting it).

Yes. I've grown accustomed to using the "hot button" word, even when it doesn't actually mean anything.

Kind of like "assault weapon."

Are there not certain cities (and maybe states) where weapons need to be registered? (I really don't know, but I thought there were)

There are, but it's not really a blanket statement you can use. Some states will require you to have a license to buy a gun (like the FOID in Illinois) where you are registered as a gun owner and some cities will you require you to register handguns. This is a minority though and does nothing more than say what guns what person owns. I've never seen any true numbers on it that say that it really does anything.

I don't think that is at all accurate, but I'd be interested in seeing some justification for that.

I've run across all his stats today. He seems to know his stuff pretty well. To be honest, if there was ANYONE on this board who could be the resident expert on guns, gun statistics, and gun laws, I'm pretty sure it's LJ.

Don't mind me....I'm stereotyping, looking at a handful of old friends. I start hearing talk about bearing arms and I stereotype, thinking back to some card games at the gun club.
FatHobbit;632173 wrote:Same here. What kind of moron shoots a sign?

How many morons that shoot a sign are CCW or NRA members is what I'd I'd like to know.

Who knows, maybe next time someone tries to rob me I'll reconsider and think guns are necessary for protection.

I've been thinking about getting a gun for home protection recently, mainly because I have a child now and things change when you worry about protecting your kids; I live in an extremely safe neighborhood, but you never know.
After doing a little research I've settled on a simple shotgun...figured if anyone comes close and they hear that all-familiar load it should be enough to send them running.
Oh, and I had a mole problem in my lawn last year, so I figured a little shooting practice off the back deck could be fun.
