someone please link me to a sport who has a playoff and also has any type of fan backlash on the fact that they have a playoff instead of a bowl system?
It's kind of like some guy starting a company .. where his employees wear purple dot suspenders. He thinks this is the best way to apply customer service. Other companies will catch on!. The company sticks to the policy for 40 years... its now a tradition "This is going to catch on" they say. However, no one else ever picked up the purple suspenders.. because its dumb as shit. Purple suspenders doesn't equal better customer service you fool. You all just look like a bunch of douche bags trying to scare the customers. Get away from the customers!
I have yet to see a trend in this direction. It's because the bowl systems is truly the gayest idea ever created. Some guy who attempted to give multiple teams a trophy and a feel good attitude to end the season somehow gathered the power and support of a few other idiotic do gooders and created this massive black whole of stupidity that is the BOWL GAMES
LETS PLAY FOR CONSOLATION! WOOO!!
College football isn't trying, nor does it need to compare itself or try to be any other sport. The NCAA tournament is single elimination and the NBA plays multiple series. Should one change to the other format? Is one better than the other? They both work for what they are.
The bowl system was in place and served its purpose before the NFL even did anything other than have its top two teams compete. The NFL/AFL expanded playoffs gradually for one reason - money. The college bowl system is based mostly on one thing - money. Again, both work the way they are designed.
In every sport, a line is drawn that ends the regular season. In most sports, several mediocre teams are rewarded with a playoff. Sometimes, an underdog goes on a hot streak. Sometimes, the best team doesn't win. In college football, mediocrity is also rewarded - with a bowl game. But whether you think someone else deserved a shot or not, there is no chance that a crappy team is going to get lucky at the right time and be called "the best". And there is something to be said for the fact that the regular season isn't just scrapped and everyone starts over.
All that aside, the fact remains that college football does just fine as it is. The NFL does just fine as it is. There's no reason for either to change because both take home the bank and a major overhaul isn't necessary (and wouldn't necessarily do any "better" for the sport).
