Just finished The Hunger Games Trilogy. REALLY enjoyed them. Probably rank them above the Twilight series but just below Harry Potter. Good stuff!

Now comes the hard part...choosing the next book I read...considering my wife and I got over 20 books for Christmas....choices, choices....

Rereading the stand. Definitely not a quick task with the unabridged version.

I got quite a bit of reading done in December, due to days off work and a couple long flights.
I finished these:
"True Grit" by Charlie Portis (quick read, pretty good, slight differences to the Coen Brothers movie, but I wouldn't say the book was better)
The Given Day by Dennis Lehane (long book, but got through it quickly. Historical Fiction taking place in Boston from 1918-1919. First Lehane book I've read and will be reading more)
"A Drink Before the War" by Dennis Lehane (Lehane's debut novel, quick read, not as good as "The Given Day" but solid Detective story)
"The Girl who played with Fire" by Steig Larsson (like the first one it took me a few hundred pages to get into it, but then I was hooked)

Currently Reading:
"The Language Instinct" by Stephen Pinker (interesting book, but it's been very slow going for me)
"Aeneid" by Virgil (very slowly getting through this)
"Beloved" by Toni Morrison (halfway through, and I am much more impressed with it than I expected)
"Falling Man" by Don Delillo (no idea how I keep ending up with books by this author, this is the third one I've started to read and I've never finished any of them. I'm on page 50 and still don't know what possessed me to read book...)

Just finished GOAT Brothers by Larry Colton. Great story about 5 fraternity brothers from UCal that were all college athletes, had to deal with disengagement, and how various factors in their lives contributed to their establishment of the masculine identity. One went on to be a writer, another an astronaut, an entrepreneur, an adventurist, and an architect.

About to start Drive by Larry Bird.

I got the sample on Kindle and in the first paragraph or so when he says 'I consulted with Karl Rove before I wrote this' that was all I needed to get a feel for how the book was going to go lol. Think I'll pass on that. Although I did read the first chapter where he talks about his alcoholism and it was a good read. He just always come off as a halfway intelligent guy that listened to bad advice.

Reading Decision Points as well, pretty interesting. Some lull in the Iraq portion of the book.
Also reading 1984 by Orwell, the Beautiful and the Damned by Fitzgerald, and 1776 David McCullough

The Stand is on my list of things to reread, along with the Dark Tower. I'm trying to read all of King's stuff at least once before I go back for any rereads. I'm slugging my way through Four Past Midnight right now.

Yeah I just started it, haven't gotten to Iraq yet. Just got through the 2nd chapter "Running" I was kind of skeptical of the book but it has been pretty interesting so far.

Just finished the Katrina chapter in Decision Points,
really interesting to hear about the governor and New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin fighting on Air Force one over whose responsibility it was to evacuate NO.

Bureaucratic failure at its best. Bush couldn't have really acted in legality at that point anyway, sending in troops could only be done if the city was declared lawless and in a state of insurrection.

Where Bush failed was continuing to let Michael Brown administer FEMA
Nearly fell out of my chair when I read that early in the crisis, if a person wanted to get FEMA aid the only way to request was VIA EMAIL. Ironically there were few requests from New Orleans proper.

Bush comes across as extremely loyal to his compatriots, even to his own undoing. Like all Presidents he has desires to help and does in lots of ways but it is never enough. I think I am going to go back and read Bill Clinton's when I am finished.

I really like the Zach Chasteen books, and I like the other 2 authors as well.

As for me, I just finished the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (ended up well, took FOREVER to get interesting). Now I'm listening to "Unbroken" a story about a miler who gets drafted into WWII and ends up afloat for 43 days then tortured by the Japs.

It was free to download, so I started "A Christmas Carol", by Charles Dickens last night. I know it's a couple of weeks late, but better late than never, right? Should only take a couple of nights.
