For a variety of reasons (weather, plane flights, days off work, etc) I tend to read much more during this time of year than any other.
I just finished two books:
"Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond- Very interesting, liked the way the writer laid out his argument, felt like I learned a lot about how different civilizations developed, but the author can tend to be very long winded at times...
"Then we came to an end" by Joshua Ferris- Took me a while to get into it, and I almost gave up on it, but about halfway through I really started to like it. I didn't find it as funny as some reviews described it, but it was still a good read...

Now I'm about to start on the following (I never have just one book going at a time):
"The Language Instinct" by Stephen Pinker
"Aeneid" by Virgil (I've been working on reading through all the classics that I never read in school. It's been slow, but worthwhile)
"True Grit" by Charlie Portis (In anticipation for the Coen Brothers movie)
"The Given Day" by Dennis Lehane

Just got a kindle yesterday and finished the first half of "Shit my Dad Says." Funny stuff.

Next on the list is "One Step at a Time" by Josh Bliell. He is a Marine who lost his legs in Fallujah and now works for the Colts as a motivational speaker. I happened to be renting a room from his then girlfriend, now wife, at the time it happened.

A non-kindle book that I'll be taking to Mexico next week since my wife and I will be sharing the kindle is "Soul Pancake" by Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute).

I want to read that. As an Economics teacher, I'm disappointed in myself that I have not.

I bought a copy on black friday since I gave the one I had away a couple years ago. $7.99 at Borders.

By the way, for all the people who have/are getting e-readers or who read on computers: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/a-complete-guide-how-to-download-books-from-google-in-pdf-format/

This lets you easily download the books on Google books as a PDF file. The part at the end where it says "Update" is what I'm talking about.

Re-reading Tolkien's Lord of the Rings for the first time since the movies came out. Also re-read the Hobbit last month (filming starts in February for the movie!).

Some parts are very bland and tough to get through, but when Tolkien really got down to the meat of the story, you can barely put it down. I'm nearly done with The Return of the King now, and even though I know how it ends, I can't wait to finish.

Am thinking of reading Phillip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle next, anyone ever read it?

In all seriousness, no filming for the Hobbit hasn't started yet, they haven't even finished casting yet, although most of the leads are already confirmed.

They are expensive for good reason. 5K resolution (almost 5x's better than 1080p), can shoot super slow mo 220fps, only weighs 5 lbs, have 512GB solid state hard drives built in, 3D ready, 9" touchscreen, can swap batteries WHILE filming. Those things are just unreal.
