Ohio Chatter should become a minor league ohio charity, networking or service site, kind of like Kiwanis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwanis Except with a very different ohio networking or ohio service type mission that is mostly internet based.

Even if we could agree who the trolls are, wouldn't they just create new accounts? I think the best way to handle trolls is to ignore them.

Exactly, lets say we ban their original account, they will create another ad nauseum. We try to keep them relatively in line with the whole infraction system for personal attacks. But as far as their just ridiculous posting goes, ignore it. What they want and need is attention, specifically negative attention from normally reasonable posters.

How would someone get on the troll list? If we vote on it, I'm envisioning someone creating multiple accounts and then voting against someone just to get them on the list. Maybe an account has to have a set amount of posts to get voting rights?

How do you decide who's vote counts? (I like where you're going with this, but I can't quite figure out the execution.)

I don't disagree, but you and me ignoring them does no good unless everyone follows suit, something that rarely happens.

Instead of banning the trolls, they should just be automatically added to everyone's ignore list, including new members when they sign up. I'm sure Justin Incredible could accomplish that.

It's reliable, relatively cheap and gets good gas mileage. :)

This can definitely be done. The problem is the same as just banning someone. Once they realize they are on the "troll" list they'll just create a new account.

Believe me, I think about this issue constantly. I'll eventually hit the jackpot with an idea.

As for how to grow the site I am constantly thinking about that as well.

The domain name gives us a lot of flexibility in what we can focus on (so long as it is relevant to Ohio, of course). Clearly this is a "sports" crowd, so that will always be one of the main draws to the site. In the future I see the HS sports section (at least for the larger sports) expanding but also focusing on the college and pro teams in the state. No, this doesn't mean we'll start posting poorly written articles (although wes_mantooth has an entire hard drive full of them just ready to post). Actually, I'm not quite sure what it means. Once my real job slows down after the first of the year, I've got a huge website to finish up before I head to Mexico in December, I'll be putting a lot of planning into the future of Ohio Chatter.

If anyone has any ideas for features (not necessarily for the forums) that would add value to the site I am all ears. Drop me a PM with your idea. No ideas are stupid, unless it's something SnotBubbles dreams up, so I am interested in hearing anything you can think of no matter how big or small it might be.

Other domains point here, but unless I want to absolutely murder my SEO the site can only live on one domain.

It's a pain in the ass to have to keep banning people who have nothing else better to do with their life than spam a message board but maybe just treat them like email spam and just keep all the mods on the lookout and zap them as they pop up. I know there are ways around IP blocks but there has to be something somewhere that can be a more permanent line of defense to keep people out or at least make them work hard to get back in so that at some point its just not worth it anymore.

For a focus I think it might be of value to brand ourselves like a magazine does like Maxim. Knowing your audience and what they want. Basically about 99% of our folks are guys between what....18-35ish? Sports, chicks, video games, entertainment, tech/gadgets. Not sure how to restructure the forums to meet that but thats what came to mind.

I like where you're headed with this. And now I've found a use for all of mantooth's articles. :) Seriously, though. This is good stuff.

I still think articles would be a plus. Let members submit articles for review, and then have an editor pick and choose what should be posted and/or make suggestions on what articles need fixed to have posted.

I mean, the content on the forums is becoming pretty dry now.

Obviously, sports is the biggest trend in this group. Sports content will provide existing members a reason to say. But you still need some content that will grab new members. Sports content may not be the answer.

For example, including a video game approach may bring in people that like to chit-chat/bullshit and play video games. Heretic is a video-game uber nerd and is already writing shit so maybe he can contribute some stuff.

I'm just rambling but I'm sure I could think of other things.
