I've been out of college now for about 5 years and when I was there I would but used copies and sell them back at the end of the quarter. On Kansas University this year there are new stores popping up advertising renting textbooks is this option cheaper or a way to avoid buybacks?

The bookstore here is trying to sell a chemistry "bundle" for $388.00...it's four books (the book, manual, study guide and some other book)...the professor only required two books. Anyways, I got on Chegg.com and found the book/manual for $60. I send the book back in December but I keep the manual.
Whatever saves you money. I don't want a damn chemistry book. I'll gladly send it back to them.

College bookstores are the biggest pain in the ass. I'll do anything to not shop there. They'll find every reason to rip you off and not buy books back. The one good thing about buying a new back is that usually they'll buy it back for 50-60% of you originally paid, but now it's getting more and more shady. You never know when a new edition of a book will come out, making the one you have worthless.

Basically to me it seems like renting isn't going to be a good option for me. I'm going to forget to take them back or I am going to destroy them. The fee to replace the book is the price of the original brand new, plus you already paid what you did to rent.
So buying your own and reselling it later seems like a better choice still, IMO.

the difference is renting is cheaper than buying even after selling the book back...however i get all my books on half.com before the semester starts. i got $700 worth of books for $325...and when i take them back to the book store, some books i get more back than what i paid for the book online
