From 2006. And how many shootings are there in the U.S. every day? There are over 700,000 police officers in this country, the idea that there are the same amount of idiots who are police as the general population shouldn't be very shocking.

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2010/may2010/detr-m17.shtml Here a policeman kills a 7 year old KID that was sleeping. I guess you will defend this one too. Maybe you should be a defense Lawyer.

I'm not defending anybody. I just don't think painting all 700,000 plus police in this country as all being bad because of a few bad apples is a good idea.

The thing is that these guys are very rarely punished is what gets people upset. Any one of us busts in and shoots a 7 year old that was sleeping and we get the death penalty. If I remember right those cops didn't even get suspended.

LJ, I guess you dont know what excessive force and common sense means.
And no need to bring race into this. Cops come in many colors and many do not act with dignity and respect that the badges on their chests would make you think.
It really is quite sad.

I just don't understand why anyone is surprised and angry about instances like these. These people are still human, just because you slap a badge on the front of their uniform doesn't make them some holy person, as much as we'd like to think of them as such. Holding people to higher standards just because of their occupation only leads to disappointment and anger.

So if one of your kids (if you have kids) got shot by a cop while they were asleep. You would not be angry? If this is the case. You don't deserve to be a parent.. EVER.

I'd be angry at that specific cop, I wouldn't paint every single one as terrible because of that incident. Do you think every single person on this planet is terrible? Regular people like you and me kill 200X more people than the police do, why should cops as a whole be any different?

So I guess you think that cops are trained to used excessive force in that situation, because the cops in both videos did exactly what they are trained to do for that type of incident.Ender Wiggin;465583 wrote:LJ, I guess you dont know what excessive force and common sense means.

I didnt say that in the least. Nice try though. It was my understanding that cops are to use the better judgment in difusing situation with common sense. Im not sure many wouldve resorted to slamming an 87 year old lady wth alzheimers who had her back turned to a trained officer who must not have been confident enough in her training to grab the knife or the arm the knife was holding or something other than slamming an 87 year old lady with alheimers who had her back turned.
Just saying.

And I am saying that the cops in both videos handled the situation the way they are trained to. Also, the cop did not know she had alzheimers, that is a moot point. My "nice try" is you saying that you don't like the way they handled it, but what they did was protocol, therefore, you do not like their protocol and feel that the protocol is excessive force. The 2 are not mutually exclusive. Either you think the protocol is right or wrong. Either you think the protocol is excessive force or it's not.

I don't like the fact that the old lady got hurt. Nobody would.
But, since the cop didn't know how old the woman was, didn't know she had alzheimers, didn't know everything that did or did not happen before she got there, the woman was unresponsive to her orders and the cop had no clue as to why the woman was unresponsive to the orders, I think the cop handled the situation quickly and decisively.
According to the article that someone posted on page 1, the old lady had already cut herself and was verbally threatening to cut others. The cop had no way of knowing if the woman was just on a rampage in general, was having some sort of psychotic episode, had alzheimers or any numerous scenarios.
It's not like the cop had a mental evaluation handed to her before she arrived on site.
I'm sure people get scuffed up during alot of takedowns. Again, it's unfortunate that the lady got banged up.
But like I said, the cop had no way of knowing how that scenario could have escalated if she didn't take direct action in the manner she did.
Speaking of common sense....
It's REAL easy to play armchair quarterback with this after the fact.

I am sure in training cops are taught how to disarm someone without causing major bodily injuries. I can understand that the officer had to take precautions. At the same time though she should of know how to take that knife away from an elderly woman without busting her head wide open especially when the old lady had her back turned to the officer. Some of our officers are stressed and scared and not really able to handle pressure. Regardless of that they are trained to keep a level head at all times. No one won in this case. An elderly woman was hurt and an officer has to live with the fact that she hurt a confused human being and the crazy part to it all is that it was all caught on tape.
The cop had no clue so next best thing is to slam her? Makes sense. No need to actually discuss things or try and find her keepers. I mean all the people around her didnt think she was a threat. Many many different ways this couldve been handled and it was obviously handled poorly. Thus the outrage from so many people.

If all the people around her didnt think she was a threat, why were the cops called in the first place?
and the cop did disarm the old lady without causing major bodily injury. oh but dont blame the mother for leaving the old lady in the car alone with a steak knife.

Because we let them carry guns and interfere in people's lives. If we're to hold them to the same standard as the rest of us then why do officers that shoot sleeping children not at the very least get fired? We'd all be executed for it, yet they get nothing. That's really my only problem with police, not that they make mistakes because we all do, but because many times there are no consequences for their mistakes.tk421;465600 wrote:I'd be angry at that specific cop, I wouldn't paint every single one as terrible because of that incident. A tragic accident, yes and would never wish yet on anyone! The officers were looking for murder suspects with a search warrant. It's not like they killed the girl on purpose, she was sleeping on the coach. She probably jumped up and one of the officers became trigger happy. Not a good thing at all but with the murder of one of their fellow officers recently, they were probably being very aggressive and shot an innocent by mistake. Very tragic and don't want to blame either party to much but why is the father wanted for murder hiding in his families house knowing the police would be looking for him. Not a very good situation anyway you look at it.
