Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that this was a recruitment.....I just meant that I have no problem with a public school getting a legitimate player that was not "born and raised".

Looks like the Leboob Shames tricke down affect has reached the high school level. It's no longer about playing for your school and community, but all about the individual. When young players have skills, they are going to get noticed regardless of what school they are playing for. AAU ball today and camps afford them that opportunity, plus behind the scenes work sending tapes and contacting programs to take a look at them.

It's a different environment today in sports, and one that is only going to get worse if parents and coaches to continue to let it happen.

^^^ to a big extent this is true. the sports environment is so far removed from what it was even 20 years ago, it's a completely different animal. the high school athlete is becoming a national recognized figure with h.s. basketball, football games on espn, high school recruiting covered on national TV, etc etc. Many elite h.s athlete have more attention thrown their way than they should, and all the atention affects them adversely. Lebron had some of that growing up, but if I were a h.s. player now it would be 10x as much. no wonder he's a self centered prima dona. Agree that aprents and coaches need to do as much as they can to keep kids grounded. Tho much of the problem is the media that has brought so much national exposure to high school athletes. Plus, the fact that with twitter, facebook, you tube, espn sportscenter, etc etc all this is done on an instantaneous basis...
All that is generalities. i have no idea what the issues are with Seger and his family with Strasburg and anything/everything else (actually i have ideas, but don't know how much is true, so won't speculate). They must be significant or they wouldn't be willing to take on the criticism that no doubt will come their way with this move. It's not my place to judge whether I think what he/they are doing is the right thing to do, because I don't know the particulars. And every person responds to situations differently. i think we need to be as supportive to everyone as best as possible and not judgmental. Often easier said than done, especially if you feel your on the short end of the situation.

One of the reasons for the lack of pride in school and community is the consolidations in some areas.

Like I said before I have mixed feelings on this. But as you say parents and coaches continue to let it happen, what then should they do to stop it? After a kid has made it quite clear that they are not happy where they are at and the parents and coaches realize they will not be able to change the kids mind, should they then just force the kid to play where he/she does not want to?

That is a tough one. Honestly, my parents would have never let me transfer because I wasn't happy. They would have told me to suck it up and play with my friends. It is a different day and age now though.

So in life, when your boss is houding on you, or in college your coach doesn't coddle you like your high school coach did, or the wife pisses you off something fierce
, the answer is to quit and walk away??? What kind of leadership is being taught at home by parents these days?? Stand up on your own two feet and blaze the path......don't take the easy way out and punt. Life ain't always easy, you know??

Exactly what I'm saying. I hate to see this happen to young men especially in today's world. Not gonna be the kind of game changer in life by doing this.

Your right it is a tough question. One that only the parents can truly answer. Likely my first reaction would be like your parents. But I can't say under certain circumstances my mind would not be changed and I would not allow it.

I am a Hiland grad. Played basketball there. Both my younger brothers transferred to Garaway during high school. One played baseball and the other wanted to play football. My mom and dad were divorced and my mom had moved into the Garaway school district. I did not like that they transferred but so be it. Even if my dad wanted to he could not have forced them to stay. But he never would have forced them to stay, even though in the case of one of my brothers he had to move in with my mom. There are a lot of underlying issues to these decisions that those looking in on the outside will never realize.

Seger and his parents have made this decision. I respect that. Only they can make it. Its not ideal how this came about, but I will support this young man just like the all the rest of the hiland players. He is now a Hiland Hawk and I will not look at him differently.

To date the transfer of Bob Huggins from Conotton Valley to Indian Valley South in 1970 holds that honor. It culminated in the 1972 state championship season for IVS going 26-0.

HUH????????? Did you hire Chad as the Boy's coach?????? Bobby went to Indian Valley because his father, man by the name of Charlie since you must not know, got a Head Coaching job at a bigger school.......Conotton to Indian Valley South!!!!! Please don't compare the 2 situations.

Oh I know Charlie was hired as coach. Always remember him making us do those darn poosh ups in the hot summer sun because some dim wits were talking while he was instructing.

So if Dad was in the package all would be well at Strasburg? I don't think so. You don't think there was dissapointed people at Conotton Valley? But I guess your right who cares about the forgotton valley. Guess that is why no one is complaining about Shawn Ball taking his talents over to Malvern.

haha, sparky........read this slowly..........If a person finds a new or better job (especially a teacher/coach), applies for and gets hired, and moves to another district to be a teacher/coach and his family moves with him, isn't that what families do???? live together that is, then how is that even remotely the same as this, along with the other 2 athletes, that have transferred school districts to solely play a sport??????? And why don't you read some of the other chatters post before you type.......in the early 70's, you NEVER thought of leaving your town or school, point is these 2 situations are 2 totally different situations and are not comparable!!!!

I understand they are not 100% the same, but there are comparisons. If you think Charlie did not consider his son's talent and the surrounding talent on the IVS squad or that the school board at IVS did not take all this into consideration in making their decision, that would be ignorant. The possibility of a deep tourney run was definitely on their minds. Loyalty to Bob's teamates at CV I am sure was taken into consideration as well, but in the end it only went so far.

My Dad got a job near Flushing, Ohio back in the early 80's. The pay was good so he took that opportunity. He chose not to move us out of the east holmes district. He grew up and went to school there as well and did not want to uproot my brothers and I. Instead he drove over an hour one way everday.

We all make decisions for many different reasons. Since no rules have been broken and I can't see any nefarious motives, I am going to welcome Seger aboard and support him and the team 100%.

I would expect you to support that young man fully....................and considering the huggins were only at CV one, maybe 2 years, not sure about the loyalty thing.......He was at Strasburg for 3 years prior to that so not alot of time to spend on childhood friendships.

I agree with you, MSpark, about supporting this young man. If he has Hiland written across his shirt, then he's one of my guys. The only way I wouldn't would be if there was something unethical done with him coming here. I learned with the Yoder transfer, the Hiland administration will have made sure every i was dotted and every t crossed, so that's not a concern.

I supported Seger in terms of appreciating his talent when he was at the Burg. I thought he was just below Dylan in terms of what he could do, but there were some things I thought he did better. I thought Dylan was a better frosh player but Seger closed the gap last year.

Thought she moved and didn't transfer. When it happened that is all you kept saying was that she moved and didn't transfer. Now you are saying she transfeered.......which is it???? I am sure her "apartment" is open now that she is at BG.

Huggins got a job and moved his family. Not just his star son.
By the way all of his sons were pretty damn good.

I know nothing about the young man in this descussion. Did his family relocate for work for the parents? Resulting in a school change?

Darkon, if you think Charlies move to IVS was solely based on economic reasons one would have to be ignorant. I am sure you read my post above.

As for this situation I don't know for sure. I am not going to speculate on rumors I am hearing. When the truth comes out I will comment on it.

I am not saying Charlie got the job solely on his son's talent. I am just saying it played a role in the decision. Bob was a well known talent in the area at the time. And why IVS? Why not Conotton Valley? You don't think the CV school board would have found a way to accommodate him? IVS had the surrounding talent. If you don't think the IVS school board knew hiring Charlie put his son on the roster as well, that would be ignorant.

Outside of my father, Coach Reese and the sweltering summers at Huggins camp had the greatest impact on my work ethic I have today as an adult. The only problem I ever had with Charlie is those poosh ups he made us do in the hot sun because the city folk would not shut up while he was giving us wise instruction. I am just trying to look at both situations realistically.
