I've never really been a huge fan of Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend but the Skullet is an awesome and very talented musician.

I've listend to both Coalesce and Cave In but I guess their just not my cup of tea?

Ha. Well, I own over 2000 cd's. I'd say about 18 to 1900 hundred of them are metal. So, I run the gamut.

Tinkertrain, as you probably know, Devin "skulletmaster" Townsend has disbanded SYL, and has his own thing now under the moniker "the devin townsend project". He is in the process of releasing 4 albums all recorded around the same time. He's now released 2 of these. The first was called "ki"...very mellow. The second, which just came out last week is called "addicted", and I'd urge you to get this album. It's super heavy but poppy. That's the way Devin described it up 'till it's release, and that's exactly what it sounds like. It's very cool, catchy as hell, and it's what good music is about. Devin takes chances, because he can, and 2, because he's frustrated with ALL the crap that passes for music these days. It's just interesting music and I'd venture that you will not hear anything like it this year, or next probably.

And, on another note...me loves me some Coalesce and Cave In. The first wave of what metalcore was supposed to sound like still sounds great. Basically, those 2 bands and Converge, Poison the Well, Skycamefalling, Acme, Ringworm, Botch and I know folks think it's gay now...but, Killswitch Engage's "alive or just breathing" is an awesome album, and so was the FIRST self-titled. The new self-titled kinda blows.

3. Slayer-"reign in blood".....Heretic brother...overrated? Are you nuts? So visceral and vicious. Thrash songwriting at it's top. The non-sensical solos and proto-Satanism? It's got it all. Listen again brother...listen again and again and
again. I SAY: Have you listened to Grave's "You'll Never See..."? I'd call that the death answer to this....at least with how I feel there's two great songs (also the bookends with "You'll Never See..." and "Christ(in)sanity") with the rest interchangeable. And while off this topic (which I really haven't actually addressed), Grave's next album, "Soulless", is one of my all-time death favorites. Pure fucking brutality!

4. Megadeth-"rust in peace" I SAY: Damn straight! Their best moment in my opinion. And possibly the best moment in old-school thrash, honestly.

7. Testament-"the gathering" I SAY: I always looked at Practice What You Preach as their best. "Ballad" was the best of their ballads just because it had enought teeth to not seem out of place, "Sins of Omission" was just incredible, I could go on.

8. Obituary-"cause of death" I SAY: I love this group! Insanely awesome stoner death riffing...especially in World Demise. Redefine and Lost just flatten me under the crunchy guitar-work.

9. Morbid Angel-"domination" I SAY: Great album. My favorite part is (can't remember the name) the Caesar song near the end. I might like Blessed are the Sick a bit more, though. That one is pure brutal chaos (a bit different than the pure schizo chaos of these awesome albums: Anorexia Nervosa's Drudenhaus and Sigh's Hangman's Hymn).

11. Blut Aus Nord-"the work which transforms god" I SAY: Now I've officially decided you fucking rule! This is an amazing album!

13. Anthrax-"among the living" I SAY: I pick State of Euphoria just because of "Finale". My favorite song by them....likely because I'm divorced and there are a lot of sentiments in that song that I REALLY feel.

16. Death-"human" I SAY: An artist I like that I really have to obtain more of. I only own Symbolic. Which contains "Empty Words". Which kicks all shades of ass.

22. Overkill-"the years of decay" I SAY: Between this and Horrorscope, you have about two hours of pure bliss! And on this one, the reach Blitz shows on "Eliminate" (or whatever it's called) is fucking crazy. "EEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!"

29. Cathedral-"soul sacrifice" I SAY: My favorite Cathedral bits were The Ethereal Mirror and The Carnival Bizarre. "Electric Funeral" puts the fun in FUNeral!

-Ya know Heretic, if you really like that Blut Aus Nord, there's more really obscure stuff that I'm sure would tickle your fancy. If you haven't, check out some Deathspell Omega, and Xasthur. Really suicidal, tortured, atmospheric black metal. Really takes someone special to make it through some of those records, and enjoy them.

I like all Cathedral, just enjoy the "soul sacrifice" ep the most. As for Death, you really can't do any wrong with any of their albums. Their swansong, "the sound of perseverence" being another highpoint for them. And, I love Grave, just didn't mention any of it. I put them in that same awesome category as Entombed, which I adore of course. Lastly....I just downloaded Overkill's new album called "ironbound". It's pretty good. Goes back to their earlier stuff in feel moreso than the previous 3 albums or so. Might be worth checking out if you find the time.

If your looking for some suicidal black metal look up a band called Shining from sweden. I have a buddy who pretty much only listens to suicidal black metal and he swear's by them. He sends me links of their song's all the time and each one is more depressing than the last one lol. Suicidal black metal is some good stuff but it's something that need's to be listened too in moderation imo.

I checked out the Ziltoid the Magnificent album awhile ago but really havent heard any of the new devin townsend project material. I'll put it on the list and give it a listen when I can.

the 90's/early 2000's ruled. i love the heavier side of 90's hardcore and hte huge influence that it had on reall/good metalcore. a friend of mine plays in Ringworm and KSE, ringworm is one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time

Another one kinda in the vein is Coldworld. Got into them recently and they have some good stuff. Or I guess I should say he has some good stuff, since it's a one-person band.

Metallica- cant go wrong with any of their first 4 albums, though im partial to master of puppets
Megadeth- Rust in piece is their best followed closely imo by Peace Sells.. but who's buying
Slayer- Reign in Blood is a must have album for any metalhead imo. Seasons in the abyss is also good
Anthrax- A bit overlooked/ underrated imo. Among the living is their best.
