Ugh. For one, the "in and around her mouth" is a movie quote. I don't know your daughter, so why the fuck do you care about my "sick insinuations about your daughter." I am sure your a decent guy. I never for the life of me thought I would get so pissed on an internet forum. Never have. But even words on an internet forum attacking a member of your family's character can have an effect on you. Maybe one day when you have children you will understand why I broke. I understand as I was a young man once just like you. But over the course of time with the issues that come with marriage and the birth of my children my perspective on life changed. It will change yours as well one day.

I'm sorry this thread turned into what it did for a while. I think as you have said recently, the "ask my permission" thing was probably the wrong way to word it. If I were you, if you haven't done so already, I would go to your daughter and tell her you would like to clarify what you meant about your earlier discussion. Tell her that you didn't necessarily need the young man to come up and ask you some awkward question like "is it ok if your daughter an I get more serious". I'm 23, and to me, that seems a lot like "hey, is it ok if I get in your daughter's pants?". In all seriousness, you have to realize that around her age, that's basically what a guy is asking when he asks you that question. As you have said, it's in her hands, so tell her that ultimately the decision is hers, but because you don't want her to get hurt, and even though she is almost 18, you would still like to meet the guy so she's not running around with some douchebag or woman-beater that you don't even know about.

It sounds like she has pretty good morals, so I wouldn't worry about having to meet the guy withing the first few times they go out. But as you said, if she seems to like a guy and she starts spending quite a bit of time with him or they seem like they're basically bf/gf, then tell her you'd like to meet him and get to know him a little bit. If you're really serious about going through with it, the next time you guys are going to dinner invite him to come along (with your daughter of course lol). Or have a cookout with some friends, and tell her to have him come over for awhile. Anything where you can meet him and it won't be an awkward or pressure packed situation for you or him. Most guys at that age are already nervous enough about meeting the parents, especially if she has the reputation of being a "good girl" because to most guys, that means they have strict/tough parents. So I wouldn't make it any worse on him or you than it has to be, because in the end, as you and so many others have said, it IS up to her. You can't make the decision for her, but she still is living under your roof and in HS, so you are allowed to be involved. Just keep a caring yet respectful distance.
