A few quick points--
First, to make sure I understand you, you're saying that you hope someone knifes me one day because I think there are some bad apple cops?

Second, the type of law I practice is about as far from being a public defender as is possible.

Third, I think it's interesting you attribute a "liberal lovin [sic] attitude" to me. Over the last decade that I've been a poster on the Huddle/OC, I've pretty firmly established my right-wing credentials, albeit more on the libertarian end. I don't really feel the need to defend myself against charges of being a liberal.

Oh come on guys, a critic of how the policeman handled that situation isn't automatically some sort of anti-establishment enthusiast. And I'm damn sure FFT isn't.

People may have different experiences with cops, mine have always been positive, and fortunately few. When I've been pulled over I'm cool with them and they've always been cool with me, no one asks for police intervention but when it happens you keep your head - and ideally the cop is professional. That's how getting a summons for doing 75 MPH (when in reality you're doing 95 MPH) happens and you get a $100 ticket instead of a reckless charge (not that I know anything about that).

The video shows just an unfortunate situation where probably all people involved acted before thinking, but the policeman is the one that has the power of the state backing his authority, and with that authority comes a greater responsibility for the action.

you talk about if jaywalking isn't a crime because maybe where you live no one cares. how about Donte Stallworth? if they guy he hits doesn't jay walk he never ends up in jail. go on youtube and look at some people who jay walk and they get busted by a car coming down the street. SAFETY. Cop was doing his job. Would it have been better if he had pulled his gun on her?

I want to put this out there to some of you big bad asses out there! You and a buddy go commit a very minor crime. When the police are called and show up start disobeying and when they decide to arrest you start resisting. Then the other one jump in to help their buddy wrestle away from the cops oh and videotape it right from the very start, please do!!

It's just that I refuse to subscribe to the "obey whatever they say" shit no matter who is telling me it. I don't care if god himself told me to murder some innocent person, I wouldn't do it because that's evil and doesn't make sense. Reason and logic rule everything.

That said, 99% of the time the reasonable thing to do is listen to the police and then fight it out in court if you believe they did something wrong. However there are cases where it would be right to intervene. There was a guy who got in a car accident and was badly burnt and cut. The police found him sitting on the side of the road a little ways down from the wreck. They had seen the car wreck and noticed he was badly burnt and heavily bleeding. They told him to lay on his belly with his hands behind his back so they could search him (don't know why). I don't know about you but if I have horrible burns and cuts all over me the last thing I want to do is lay on my stomach and bend my arms behind my back. Because he wasn't complying with the officers they tazed him. Multiple times. He then apparently freaked out and jumped on top of their cruiser. This scared the officers so they fired multiple shots at him and killed him. "I just knew that I couldn't let him get blood on me" - from an investigation interview with one of the officers.

If you came upon that scene and didn't try to stop the officers then there is something wrong.

I am watching the video now but come on yes you will find videos of cops doing bad things just like you would find people do bad things in your office if people were taping it. Where are the millions and millions of videos of them doing the right thing every single day??? Exactly!!

When was the last time an officer ordered an innocent person to murder someone?

I Wear Pants, I don't know anything about that case in that video, I watched part 1 of 5 I don't have the time to finish it. I would like to read up on it later though however the makers of that video have an agenda of their own you cannot dispute that either!! Again its easy to find a video of cops doing wrong, even things like murder, but in all walks of life there are murderers! Again start showing me the videos of things done right????

Let me put this in a better perspective for some of you:
There are thousands upon thousands of cops right? A few bad apples so they are all bad right?
There are thousands upon thousands of soldiers right? A few bad ones do something bad in Iraq and they are all bad right?

I didn't say they were all bad.

I just hate that people assume that they are good. We shouldn't assume that they are all bad either. We should only assume that they are not perfect and be wary of them (not because they're real likely to make a mistake but because when police make mistakes people can get shot, tazed, hit, arrested, and defamed without reason.).

Just use reason and everything will be okay. I'm not here yelling "fuck tha police" but I think equally stupid is to always take the side of the cops like many people do. They mess up just as often as anyone else.

What we should assume is that they will do what they agreed to do when taking the job, nothing more, nothing less!

Unless there is some extreme circumstance where it would be immoral for you to obey (these are likely quite rare) you should just do what the cop says and then battle it out in court. That goes along with my "be reasonable" philosophy.

^ that is what I have been saying. If a cop tells you jump in front of a moving train, yes I am gonna disobey. If the cop tells me to place my hands on his car and spread em I am going to comply even if I don't agree and we will go to court!
