There are a few legitimate reasons for Notre dame to remain an independent.
Rivalries. Notre Dame simply could not join the Big Ten and continue to play Southern Cal, Navy, Boston College. Notre Dame also has some infrequent rivalries with Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Miami, etc., etc. Should Notre Dame join the Big Ten, they'd be grouped with Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue so that wouldn't be a problem; they would also probably be grouped with Penn State and that has also been a rivalry so that'd work too. Is Pittsburgh joins the Big Ten that'd work too. However at the end of the day Big Ten teams in a fourteen-team conference are likely to play nine conference games (seven divisional games and two rotating crossover), that leaves a mere three OOC games, which Notre Dame would have to give to Southern Cal and probably Navy. Boston College and Stanford would be terminated from the schedule. At the end of the day Notre Dame cannot be pleased with only have
one game every year to get creative with. And that's reason
number two: scheduling difficulties.
The road to a National Championship would also be much harder in my opinion, so
schedule strength becomes an issue. Now I will say that I don't think Notre Dame is afraid to play anybody. You're a damn fool (read: sleeper) if you think otherwise. They, like everyone else, simply don't want to play everyone all of the time. Teams like Ohio State constantly load MAC teams into their schedules because they have too many good teams as it stands. That's why the SEC is brutally tough and they schedule FCS teams like it's going out of style. It clearly would not behoove Notre Dame or improve their chances at an undefeated season if they were to have to play Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Southern Cal every year. Should they beat them, they'd end up seeing Iowa/Nebraska/Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship. They'd also probably see one of them in the crossover rotation too. It'd be brutal for the entire conference and I'm not sure they view that as better than their current set up. Notre Dame plays a lot of solid teams as is.
There is
plenty to gain though. Money is probably the biggest gain. The Big Ten Network would explode beyond anyone's dreams. It'd truly be a national network in my opinion. Now Notre Dame makes a shitload of money (which may be surprising because they've sucked as of late), but as we've all heard they'd bring in even more with the Big Ten Network.
At the end of the day all Notre Dame needs to do is win. Independent or in the Big Ten.
As for my opinion, join the fucking Big Ten already.
