I don't understand this move by Gilbert. Do I think Izzo is a great coach? Yes. But he is a college coach and I don't know how well he handles the egos of the NBA. Just not sure why Gilbert would want a college guy, but then again, maybe it turns out to be a good move. I'm sure Izzo, like anyone else that the job would be offered to, will be waiting on Lebron to make a decision.

Besides the fact that Gilbert loves him (Izzo), I think his mindset is that he wants what he considers one of the top guys. If he can't have a Phil Jackson, Popovich, etc I doubt he wants to settle for a retread like Avery Johnson or Byron Scott. And if he can't have one of the top PRO guys, he's going to go after one of the elite college coaches.

He isn't like those other owner's you named. Those guys are pretty much everything to the team except the MVP. However, an owner that just fired two guys now wants more control of the team per "sources"... then yeah, I consider that to be a very hands on owner. It isn't a problem, yet. But this is how it starts. That's the first step to him turning into a Cuban or Jones. Will it happen, eh, who knows? I certainly don't. There are some guys that don't do much at all-- you don't even know they own the team unless you check it up. There are other guys that will support no matter what and don't question the GM's moves at all. No matter how many "sources" you throw out, I will not believe that Gilbert was not involved in the moves of this team and that he sat back. I'm not saying that he vetoed Ferry moves like a Jones would, but I am saying I highly doubt any moves got made that he didn't believe in. But no big deal, I won't talk about it anymore. It seems this thread has went off road anyways. Time to move on I guess.

I don't follow the NBA that closely, but I do follow college basketball.

Izzo would be a terrible hire for a pro team. He's a college coach.

Gilbert is letting his personal admiration of the man cloud his better judgment, it would seem.

In any case, I don't see Izzo accepting any offer to coach pro ball, but Gilbert or anyone else. I think he's too smart to leave a great position that already pays him more money than he'll ever need to do what he truly loves.

Avery Johnson is a damnnnn good coach though. Hes like 75% wining percentage or somethin crazy like that, and knows the game very well. Point Guards usually make pretty good coaches

Obviously. Same here. But if we're going to throw around Tom Izzo's name, why not Eric Snow? Or for that matter, Eric Spoelestra. How about Eric Forman?

I, for one, would not be at all upset with Avery Johnson.

But I actually agree with lhs, I'm sick of rumors day in and day out--why can't people just sit back and wait to see what happens anymore?

BTW, SQ I actually defended you in a long post on the thread talking about you, but right before I went to submit it I actually hit the refresh button and lost all of it and didn't feel like re-typing it, but the gist of it was that I was giving you shit just to give you shit and actually agree with some of the things you say about most things, including this.


I'm going to wait back and see. I'm going to read the rumors, but not comment or really think about it. All I know is that in the fall, the Cavaliers season will start and 3 things will happen:

1) New coach
2) Lebron will either stay or leave
3) There will be personnel changes


I'm not caring about any rumors about any of those things, I'm just sitting back and am interested to see what happens.

Brian Windhorst tweeted saying that Gilbert has discussed framework of a 5 year $6 million/year contract with Izzo. Includes other perks like free use of Gilbert's private jet.

Please don't get me started about sports media. It's single handedly destroying sports. I remember on Buckeyes Media Day during the Rose Bowl, and I remember this specifically because this guy is a total douche asked the following questions, 1 to TJ Ward and the other to Austin Spitler, both of whom were set up in booths so anyone could hear/ask:

Question to TJ Ward: Ohio State has said they don't think the Oregon defense is anything special, if anything it is rather weak, thoughts?
To Spitler: Oregon's Jeremiah Masoli said the OSU defense isn't better than anything in the Pac 10, not even the other OSU (Oregon State defense), thoughts?


I swear to god on my life that Masoli never said that about OSU's defense, at least publicly, and none of the OSU offensive players stated what the Oregon writer asked to Ward.

The sportswriter literally made up something in order to frame his question to try and get Ward or Spitler to say something stupid so they would have an article to write. I would assume that acts like this are widespread nowadays, and writers frame questions certain ways trying to make up a story when there isn't one there.


It fucking pissed me off, and I told Spitler after the douchebag left that Masoli never said that, to which Spitler replied "I'm not surprised, you should hear some of the questions they asked us".

I have Spitler's interview somewhere on my camera but I can't find it.

This coming from the guy who criticizes everyone for getting their opinions from ESPN.

Is that not the definition of irony? You criticize anyone that watches ESPN and forms an opinion similar to one of their hundreds of analysts, and you saying that you wathc 1st and 10, which is probably the worst show on ESPN.

Seems like threads start off good about a topic, get heated which is actually fine, then it turns into a pissing match about what exactly? I'd be willing to give Tom Izzo a chance.

Ask yourself, what do the Cavs need?

1) Discipline
2) Offensive sets
3) Defense
4) A coach whose teams get better as the season goes on, eventually peaking in the postseason.

ALL those things Izzo brings. It's not like we're talking about some flash in the pan college coach who had a couple of great seasons and is now looking to make the jump. Izzo is as established as you can be.

I also have to laugh at the people saying they'd rather have Coach K because he has the "experience" of coaching NBA guys while in the Olympics. Let's not get carried away here. There is not a coach who has done less in the last 10 years than Coach K with great talent at Duke. Not getting on the guy mind you, because he's a GREAT HOF coach. One of the top 3 in the game. But to automatically assume he can coach in the NBA more so than Izzo, just because he coached the "Redeem team" which had superior talent to every other team it faced, is a little crazy.

LeBron respects both Coach K and Izzo. And I think both their systems would work in the NBA. (IMO)

As for the framework of this deal, Gilbert is putting his money where his mouth is. 5 years 6 million per with a ton of perks including use of a private jet.

Not to mention that at one time almighty Kobe and the Lakers were pushing for Coach K and that was BEFORE he coached the Redeem Team. I think Izzo would definitely be a better fit that Calipari if they're going the college road. Say what you want about how the NBA is a different game and whatnot but in the end it's still 5 on 5 with a 10 foot hoop. I feel like if good but not great college players have success in Izzo's system, that NBA players would be even more successful. I mean the guy just coaches good basketball. Now the handling of egos and whatnot is another thing. Izzo tries to keep the primadonnas away from MSU (though has coached guys like Jason Richardson and Zach Randolph) so it'd be change for him but I think he's also a guy that commands respect and gets his players to buy into his philosophies and methods. Overall I think it would be a great opportunity for Izzo and a great fit for the Cavs.

I'd give Izzo a chance too. Though I don't think going to a college guy is the best idea, you never know--just because guys in the past failed at the next level doesn't mean everyone will.

Obviously it will take a lot of money to bring Izzo to Cleveland, but is he really worth $30 million? Maybe he is, maybe he isn't.

There's no doubt in my mind that Izzo can handle the NBA game as far as schemes go, but with any college to the pro coach, it's about the egos. It's a different beast when you are coaching guys who have millions in their bank account to have fun with. Then you have the entourages and agents and all that, and it's hard to predict how someone can handle it.

I'm one of the few who seems to think Calipari would be successful in the NBA in his second try at it. When that happens I don't know. But he will be in the NBA at some point. The reason I think he will be good is because he seems to be able to handle the egos of multiple stars on one team. He had a team with possibly six 1st round draft picks last year, and we didn't hear of one problem internally. As for the X's and O's, he isn't as good as Izzo, but he can always find assistants.
