Thats an easy call to make when the ump was right there and he beat him by a good step and it was the last out of the game to make it worse to ruin his perfect game. I dont blame his teammates for coming out and getting in that umps face after the game.

That was a horrible call. It wasnt even close. I cant believe that an ump would make a call like that.

why? missed calls happen every game. there wouldnt be any umpires left if they were fired for bad calls.

did you notice Galarraga had to flip open his glove after the play? although i doubt anyone would say he didnt have control of the ball or whatever the language is.

a half of a step is not close when you are paid to make the correct call. He is paid a lot of money to not miss a relatively easy call.

to the untrained eye it's a close call, to someone who's a professional umpire, it's an easy call, not close at all.

i disagree. if it had been a hard throw from the SS where you can listen and tell the difference i would say it would be easy. when he has to watch for the pitcher's foot and see when the pitcher catches the ball, it becomes a much harder call to make. its like when a runner tags up, the umpire cannot watch the ball and the runner at the same time. in this situation, he could not watch the glove and the pitchers foot at the same time.

Wow, this is unbelievable. That was the last out and the ump ruined the perfect game!?!?!?!?!? I would be pissed to say the least.
Is this the straw that broke the replay camel's back. If some good comes of this it may be that replay is introduced.

My whole thing is that these guys are paid a ridiculous amount of money, so they have to get it right. I realize it is tough for you or me to make that call, but a veteran guy that is supposed to be one of the best in the world(why else would he have that job)....has to get that right....at that moment.

Watching it on tv, it wasn't the best angle but you could tell that Galarraga had the ball and beat him to the spot, the issue was maybe whether he missed the bag. Only thing I can think of is the ump was out of position or maybe got the feet mixed up, but IMO it was worse than the Denkinger call back in '85. I remember watching that on tv and you (or I should say at least I) couldn't tell in real time.

Not that it matters but he blew the same type of call in the bottom of the 8th. Called Damon safe when he was out by about the same distance. Cost the Indians 2 runs.

i agree, but they make errors just like the players do. unfortunately this one cost someone a perfect game.

Thats what I was kind of thinking. The length of the guys career as an umpire makes it worse, IMO. Thats a call he should have gotten right with his amount of experience.

haha yeah, but no one wants it for this. it would have been the first perfect game against them. now they will still be in the news because of the controversy, but still not have a perfect game against them haha.
