I'll repeat this one more time, the Indians runner KNEW he was out, you could tell by his reaction. If a baserunner knows he's out, it isn't close. There was never a moment when the runner got ahead of Galarraga,even watching on real time.

those sports repoters and players arent professional umpires who have been trained to make those calls and have been doing them for 20 years, even been voted among the best of the umpires several times by SI. if a professional umpire says his first reaction WITHOUT watching the replay was that he looked safe, i'll believe him. also, the runner had a whole different view of the play, he also didnt have to watch to see if the pticher fully caught the ball either.

I was 100% sure Gallaraga beat the runner to the bag watching it live. I wasn't 100% sure he touched the bag. Reading some of Joyce's comments he mentioned that he thought the runner beat him. Joyce should be commended to owning up to the mistake, but that is still inexplicable. It is a shame it happened the time it did, but it is inexcusable if it happens anytime.

Maybe we need age limits on umpires. I'll be the first to say that I doubt I'll be as acute with my senses when I reach Joyce's age. At some point the "20 year argument" becomes a counterargument.

i def give him props for not only apologizing to the pitchers face but also publicly accepting responsibility for the bad call.

bad calls are part of the game. that is the human element that i love about baseball. still everyone in the building knew the situation...if it was close geez i would rather side on calling the guy out....what a dunder

just saw on ESPN that Galarraga is going to stand in for Leyland and give Joyce the line up card before the game.

they also presented him with a convertible before today's game as well; everyone in Detroit thinks it was a perfecto.

I feel as bad for the guy as anybody, but the fact is that umpires and officials are a human element of the game, and they've been that way for 100 years and will remain that way. Bad calls have affected the courses of games and season for years before, currently, and will in the future.

What I don't want to see is a replay system that has become sort of like college football's where they review every border line play that shows more often than not that the on-field officials got it right. It will also slow down the pace of play considerably, which is already a huge factor in why some people don't like to go out to ball games or watch them on tv because games routinely last 3 hours.

classy moment for Jim Joyce who just handled the lineup exchange with Galaragga turning in the Tigers card. Joyce was fighting back tears and stood up like a man today and accepted his mistake. Classy, classy man. He may have missed a big one, but I'll be a Jim Joyce fan for the rest of my life.

Joyce missed the call. It would not have been as close if Galarraga had his foot on the base, or if the first basemen would have gone to first and let the second basemen get the ball. Dont want to see them go that far, but at least he owned up to it and handled it with pride and dignity. Hopefully he continues to umpire for a long time, like Don Denkinger did after his infamous gaff, in a World Series no less.

I think that a poll would be interesting in which you vote on whether you think Selig should rule to change it or let it stand, and you vote by what age you are. I am guessing that us old guys would say don't change it, while the younger crowd would say to change it.

So the dude got a new car for his performance....hmmmm.....guess that takes a little sting out of it for him.

i am young, i would vote dont change it.

I'm one of those in the younger crowd that would say leave it as it is. Been on the wrong side of enough bad calls that its engrained in my mind that its part of the game. Does it lessen the sting of it anymore? No, but that's the way it is

I am a lifelong Tigers fan, but I don't think it should be overturned for many of the reasons listed. After I have allowed my emotions to settle, after last night, I feel that even though the incorrect call was made, it's apart of the game. Players have been on both ends of bad calls and have accepted that.

Gallaraga is over it, everyone else should be.

I truly feel bad for Jim Joyce. You can tell he is genuinely sorry.
