He was only hurt for a significant amount of time 1 year in the 90s. Like 94 or 95. And he had a couple good years with the Reds before injuries took their toll.

You can't say he's not a First Ballot. Like Mooney said, who would take over him?

Without a doubt he's a first ballot HOF'er.

The guy had some amazing NATURAL talent, and it sucks that his fans will always wonder "what if he hadn't gotten hurt."

I've always liked Griffey...and I don't know how anyone can say he's overrated unless they are high as fuck or just plain retarded.

Only one outfielder since 1989(when I started my search) has multiple MVPs. That's Juan Gonzales. Would you really take him over Junior?

Edit: American League^^

Obvii, Bonds had like 7. 4 of them coming during his steroids career.

Bonds had 7 MVP's, 3 before steroids. He and Griffey are 1 and 1a as far as outfielders go for the 90's.

Juan was tight.

All I'm saying, is that Griffey is revered like he's the Jordan of Baseball, when he actually never accomplished anything even remotely close to being revered like he is. He was a natural, and probably could have been, but he never lifted weights and he was injured all the time (which, in a sport like baseball, for a position player, is a joke).

He, like Jordan, just came at the golden age for marketing athletes and he's lived off that for awhile now. The dude recently fell asleep during a baseball game. I'm sorry, but he's just simply not as half as good as 90% of people think he was.

I would also take Barry Bonds over Ken Griffey Jr in a heart-beat, and I'm a Dodgers fan who would shank Barry Bonds if given the chance.

No one is calling him the Jordan of baseball. (On the contrary, Jordan was the Babe Ruth of basketball, if you wanna get nitpicky). But Griffey has been the best player of his era. And arguably the best player since the greats of the 60's and 70's retired (Hank Aaron and co.). I would like you to name me one player who was a better player than Griffey since 1980. Barry Bonds was one of the best, even before he roided up. But he never had the power numbers that Griffey had until around 2000 when he started juicin'. Also, while Bonds was a great fielder, Griffey was better and I don't think its even close.

JORDAN WAS NOT THE BABE RUTH OF BASKETBALL. Good God.

You want to talk about another guy that was overrated? Babe fucking Ruth. Christ. Dominated an era where blacks weren't allowed and a dude that subsisted on beer and hot dogs was able to dominate the majors. Another clown that history pumped out.

You're avoiding the argument because you have no basis for your claim that Griffey is not a first ballot HOFer. Just admit you're wrong and leave the thread, or admit that you know nothing about baseball and leave the thread. It really comes down to those 2 choices.

Oh and obviously any baseball player who played before oohhhhh 1950 or so is automatically disqualified from being good because there were little to no blacks before 1950. You're doing really well on your arguments tonight let me tell you.

Still waiting on ONE player better than Griffey.

What are the parameters here

am i only allowed picking outfielders during Ken Griffey's heyday? Can I pick any position players? THE DUDE HAS ONE FUCKING MVP. AND THE LEAGUE GIVES OUT TWO EVERY YEAR. He was tight, but you're allowing marketing to get in your head bro. i mean, if your claim is "ken griffey jr was a very good baseball player" then, i'd be forced to agree. but he ain't anywhere near where some of you people want to rank him.

What are the parameters?! NAME A PLAYER FROM GRIFFEY'S GENERATION BETTER THAN HIM. To make it easier for you, we'll exclude pitchers because thats a different animal altogether.

Cal Ripken Jr. was a 1st ballot HOFer and he never led the league in any offensive category EVER. Hell, he only won two gold gloves his whole career. Griffey had TEN. I am not knocking Ripken in any way, but he almost was a unanimous vote into the HOF on his first try (98.53%) and he wasn't as good as Griffey either offensively or defensively. Not by a long shot.

Tony Gwynn.....ALSO a 1st ballot HOFer. ZERO MVP awards (never higher than 3rd) only FOUR Gold Gloves.

I don't want to get into the actual debate, but you can't use this in your argument. It's not like he had a chance at winning either of the two awards each year. Only one each year was available for him to win.

He isn't one of the best ever? It's like judging MJ's career by his stint with the Wizards. You have a short fucking memory.

I remember growing up a BIG Griffey Jr fan. Even though I was a Tribe fan, Griffey was always my favorite non-Indian player.. Then he went to Cincy and shit hit the fan at a high rate of speed.

Seriously though, growing up EVERYBODY tried to mimmic Griffey Jr. when playing baseball. He was the face of the league for a LONG time.

Terrible fielder. Great hitter, not great all around player. Barry Bonds is close, but Griffey was a better fielder. Ichiro I'm not even gonna touch, and if you knew baseball, you'd know better than to say that name.
