I think you nailed it with your 2nd sentence.

You're correct. A boycott like this won't do anything to BP's bottom line, but it could affect your local BP owner and his employees.
Doesn't BP have a deal with Iraq for one of their oil fields?

I'm pretty sure BP has some sort of contract that gives them access to some of Iraq's southern oil fields..

But maybe i'm mistaken...

BP won the contract for Iraq's largest oil field, but I believe they are using it for their European operations. Now, while their local sales are sourced from NA, the company as a whole uses a shit ton of middle eastern oil. They are a british company. Ya know.... BRITISH Petroleum lol

Correct. What I was talking about was that all of their gas sold in the US comes from the US. At least, it did back when I was in high school and I read an article about what gas companies import from the Middle East and which only use domestic oil.

We'll all be buying less gas once Congress reverses course on off-shore drilling.

Although, admittedly, while I'm no eco-nut if something fucks with my Gulf shrimp I take notice!

It doesn't make any difference though. The company as a whole uses a lot of other oil. And BTW, not all of it is domestic, they just don't import from OPEC.

they are now on the list with exxon. its not so much that they didnt mean to do it as they are definitely dragging their feet at fixing the problem. they're should have been a plan to fix any potential problem before they could have built the thing. we do this with red exit lights in buildings, metal fire escpaes, metal stairwells, sprinkler systems, fire hoses in buildings, etc. how is this any different?

Imagine if the exit lights burned out, the metal stairwells and fire escapes rusted through, and the water was was shut off to the sprinklers and fire hoses and all the while the fire marshal approved the inspections.

And if every single driver in America never bought one more single gallon of gas from the BP this would help stop the leak on the bottom of the ocean floor how? Grab a feckin' clue from the "I'm an idiot" bag!

I try to stay away from Murphy/Walmart (cheap/poor quality), Citgo, and Chevron (because they import a lot of oil from Venezuela).

I prefer Shell or BP gasoline (think it burns better/cleaner). I always by Sunoco when I can (US owned, NO imported oil. I love that).

As much as BP failed with this. It's really a good thing for the oil industry because we know now that what had been required (by the US Government) was not enough. If anything better precautions will be in place so that the next time this problem happens with a well, someone will be able to stop it before 11 guys lose their lives and millions of barrels are spilled. Messing up the ecosystems and ruining a lot of people's lives is not what the oil business is about, but it seems to get a lot of bad press telling the public otherwise. I'm in the oil business and I can tell you most of the people I work with are as upset if not more upset by this spill than any PETA or tree hugging nut out there.

j_crazy I agree but I will not stick up for the oil companies as they have been sticking it to us cost wise since the dawn of time. However like I said earlier in my post boycotting is only taking money out of American Workers' hands and I'm not doing that. My best friends father has owned and operated the BP (formally Sohio) station in my hometown of Oak Harbor since before I was born. It wasn't his fault and I won't take food off his family's table because of it.

And even with all that in place, buildings still burn and people die in fires.

Sticking it to us?

"Big Oil" profit margins are only around 8% if I remember correctly while a typical company is in the 10-17% profit range.

Lets not forget that with respect to inflation...

http://www.inflationdata.com/inflation/images/charts/Oil/Gasoline_inflation_chart.htm

We were just "babied" for about 2 decades where the price of gas with respect to inflation actually dropped.

not since the breakup of standard oil has the oil industry been sticking it to the public.

I thought BP had at least a little bit of involvement in Venezuela.

Maybe not importaing and the like yet, but they do have staff there and are taking part in exploration and the like.

But, don't really know what all that entails. Do you?

I'm sure they do, but with Citgo it's like 90% of their oil coming from VZ and Chevron its like 50%.
