I agree with you except that my guess is that most people swear a lot more or at least a lot more freely on here than they do in everyday speech. My philosophy is that if you wouldn't say it in front of your grandma or if you wouldn't want your 12 year old kid saying it in public, then you shouldn't be saying it either.

I agree with the original poster that using it occasionally for emphasis or to make a point is fine, but using it for no reason when a less-offensive word would have made the point just as effectively isn't necessary.

You're kidding, right? If what you say is true then it should be acceptable to use profanity in any setting. Why not use it in church or at Thanksgiving Dinner with the whole family present?

Better yet, try it at a job interview.

Look, as I said originally, I agree that profanity can be used to make a point and to emphasize an opinion. My point in starting this thread is that it is overused here and on most other internet forums. Do you honestly disagree with this contention?

However, don't try to tell me that is okay to swear in all social settings because we both know that just isn't true. You can probably think of as many expamples as I can.

One point we can agree on is that it undoubtedly is a generational thing. I'm over sixty, so I would guess we were indeed raised in different times.

BTW, Thanksgiving is in no way a religious holiday despite what you may have been told.
