Looking at either North or South Carolina for late July or early August. Anyone know of any good places. Not real excited about the tourist traps like Myrtle Beach.....just want somewhere with a nice beach and a place to relax. Have got a 15 year old and a 13 year old who may both take friends, so a few things geared to that age (go-carts, waterpark, etc) would be nice. Anyone got any ideas?

Hilton Head is nice. not as touristy as myrtle beach, pretty relaxed and family friendly.

i've also heard great things about pawleys island.

Holden Beach is definitely a nice place to go and relax without all the tourist traps. It's close to Calabash, Cherry Grove, and North Myrtle. All a 15 or 13 yr old should want to do at the beach is walk up and down the beach bird doggin' the opposite sex!! :D

If you want a great deal, I am sure you could get one on the gulf coast.

I stayed here with my family a few years ago

http://www.wilddunes.com/?esitecname=Charleston.com-+WDR+Leisure+Homepage it's just outside of Charleston and has a lot of activities including kayaking, hiking etc.

I think it would be perfect for you because it was mostly family with teenagers. They even had a sort of teen-friendly dance at night.

The good part is that its very easy to get to Charleston from there, which is a very interesting city.

We used to have a condo in Cherry Grove, very quiet area but still close to the tourist traps if you really want to go there. The area between Wilmington and North Myrtle has some pretty quiet areas.

We went on our honeymoon almost 2 years ago to Harbor Island, SC.....I enjoyed it, within 30-45 minutes from some main cities with things to do.

Buncha nice places on the coast. The North vs. South thing is played up by a very vocal minority, and it is a tired act imo.

Basically, throw out Myrtle Beach, and you can't go wrong from the OBX down to Folly Beach.

I'm lookin' forward to tryin' the OBX again, hopefully next year! We made a terrible decision to stay on the 4x4 beach @ Corolla last year. Drivin' down the beach was cool exactly 1 time, then it was a huge pain in the ass!!
