I'd like to know what the problem was with the hispanic students and principle? Why would they get all pissy to see a small group of AMERICAN students in AMERICA wear AMERICAN FLAG clothing - regardless of what day it was?

Even MSNBC has come down against the school. They said the high school administration encouraged students to wear the flag of Mexico - a foreign nation. So why these folks wore OUR flag. I've had family shed blood and die for this country and I would have brought as much red, white and blue to the school as I could if I were a student here.

I think the multicultural argument comes with a degree. We integrate a little bit of the culture from most countries where our people have come from. But these immigrants learned english, encouraged their children to be American and gave their allegiance to our country. Now we see people who don't learn our common language and are more loyal to Mexico than our country. We also have racist groups like La Raza - translation 'The Race'. That is a problem.

Let's be clear, Cinco de Mayo is NOT a hispanic holiday. My Guatemalan friend couldn't care less about it. It is a Mexican holiday, but not even a national holiday in Mexico. In fact, it is only really celebrated in the state of Puebla. Don't make it more than it is.

Strapping young lad, your notion of they did this on purpose, IMO is spot on! I for one applaud them. I dont care what their motives. As for you idea that America doesnt have the right to nationalize anyone into their culture because everything they have has been borrowed stinks my like my 9 month olds crappy diaper. Every culture and country in the world has assimilated years worth of other cultures ideas, religions, beliefs, customs, dress, food, language, etc... Just because the US started just over 300 years ago doesnt count towards our culture. Baseball, basketball, football, cheeseburgers, the different dialects of different regions all of that and much much more are nothing but borrowed and therefore not a valid reason for a visitor or immigrant to want to assimilate into that culture.

The problem is the US upholds itself as the land of the free, and too many take advantage of this and twist it to their own agendas. I for one love celebrating, singing, eating and drinking and taking all of that in about other cultures, however I will be dammed if I wont speak up for someone wanting to instigate their right to speak up and defend their country!

Also, I don't really feel the need to ridicule and instigate the Irish on St. Paddys Day, the Mexican's on Cinco, Christians on Christmas, or Blacks on MLKJr.

I'd rather celebrate w/ them instead of trying to show them up b/c of my own pride. I wear green on St.Paddy's day, listen to Christmas carols on Xmas, and eat tacos and drink corona on Cinco de Mayo. But too each his own. If Mexican Americans taking a day to recognize some event in their history and inviting the community to share it with them makes you want to assimilate instead of enjoying multiculturalism, I guess that's your problem. I guess I can't help you....

You have the right to "nationalize" anyone you want but you won't succeed b/c only an ignorant few even care to try and strip America of the cultures of the people who make up America.

There's both of course, but one could make a compelling case that the latter passed the former in frequency and never looked back. In fact I'd say there's very little doubt.

While I agree it was stupid to reprimand the students, let's not get carried away. They are still student, who have constricted rights. The schools does have the rights to determine dress code, rules,etc. It was just this was taken way, way too far.

Kids should not have been reprimanded at all. If the kids had t shirts that said "fuck Mexicans" or similar, then that's a different story.

Were the shirts a tad "controversial"? Yeah probably. But not at all incindiary. And so what? I wonder if the 4th of July gets the same positive press in Mexico that Cinquo de Mayo gets in our country.

Cinco de Mayo is barely a holiday in Mexico (Mexican Independence day is September 16th), most people don't know that though, they just think it's a day to get drunk and party.

Secondly, I don't care what the intentions of these kids were, if they choose to wear red, white and blue colors, that is their right; just as it is the right of anyone else to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Lastly, how many people on this thread are going to use the wrong form of PRINCIPAL? It's not principle when referring to the official at a school, it's PRINCIPAL.

First, I wasn't addressing you. I was going after SYL's poor example of saying that the only sport (of the three mentioned) created in the US was baseball.

Second, there is no question that basketball is entirely a US creation. We have a date, location and creator that we can point directly at. There is absolutely no evidence that it started anywhere other than here.
