I used to...and then I had a tragic accident where half my face melted off. Something like that happening really opened my eyes (err...I mean "eye", since the second one melted) to how vain and judgmental I had been.

Most people do judge by that first appearance. Someone told me in one of my business classes that business are like 70% certain to higher the better looking person if two resumes are fairly similar

Like Justin said, it has an initial impact. When it comes to employment, it may be the last impression for that reason. We're human, and it's easy to stereotype based on appearance.

However, I always take the time to get to know someone, despite how they look, in my personal life. Some of the greatest people I know are some ugly mo-fo's.

I am covered in tats, bald head, goatee, a few piercings of course I am judged but I don't let it bother me. I would lie if I didn't say I didn't judge people based on appearance but many times I have been proven wrong about a person once I meet them. Hopefully alot have felt the same about me!

Working with children I can honestly say that I dont. But I think I do with adults.
I'm going to go with this comment from my fellow colleague. Very well stated, IMO.

I will add that when you are out in the real world, take a good look at yourself in the mirror and see if that's what you hope your future employer wants.

Yes, absolutely. If some one is covered in tats, has a bald head, goatee and piercings... automatic negative thoughts!

I probably do more than I think I do and certainly more than I would like to admit. But you never do get a second chance to make a first impression.

When it comes to a "job", most would say yes.

Now, would I hire someone less qualified? No
If two people were equally qualified (or dang close) and one is very clean shaven, etc etc while the other had long hair, scruffy beard, full sleave tattoo, etc. Yes, I will hire the clean shaven one. You have to remember that you are talking about a place of business, so how you appear to that business's customers is VERY important.

I think it depends on the situation. If we're talking about someone who has to deal with customers on a daily basis and they reflect on the companies image, I think i would probably go with someone with a more professional image. If I'm looking for someone to do a job that doesn't deal with customers I'm going to go with who is better able to do the job. I do think appearance has something to do with customer service, so sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn't.

Of course I do; most people (if they're honest) do as well. Do I make any important decisions about that person before getting to know them? No. But first impressions are important; you only get one chance to make it.

When someone is clearly sending the message "I don't give a shit what you think" through their appearance, I'm fine with that. Of course, that person is quite likely wasting their time coming to me for a job.
