Do you judge by appearance?

If someone is more qualified for a job, but has long hair and a beard, would you hire someone who is a little less qualified, but has a clean haircut and is cleanly shaven?

i feel like i am falling victim to someone who does judge by appearance (i have long hair and a well kept beard)

Hell no, I have kicked it with some really cool people that look like they just crawled out from under a rock like fair time in Fairfield County.
But for a job, yea you gotta clean yourself up a little bit. I wouldn't give a shit about a beard or whatever as long as it was trimmed up and not too all Griz Adams looking. But if you stink, breath, pits, feet, ass, shoes, draws, you aren't coming in my house or near anything I own.

Yes, in my line of work if you aren't the best you are going to be working for someone else.

Yes, everybody does.
According to the poll so far....50% say they judge by appearance...the other 50% are liars.

I will have an initial reaction, but I don't hold judgement on a person until after I've interacted with them.

I make snap judgments on just about everything I see and hear, but they aren't static. I give people a chance to prove my assessments wrong

If it's going to be a problem cut your hair or something. I just don't get it, like, there are kids in some of my business classes with neck tattoos. What are they thinking?

Everyone has an initial impression of someone they first meet. You do too, it's an unavoidable part of the human condition. So if you're going for a job interview, you have to take it into consideration. Whether or not it's fair isn't the point, how badly you need/want the job and what you've done to not allow your appearance to be a hurdle a potential employer needs to "get over" is.

Neck tattoos are game over for me. You can only climb so far up the totem pole with a neck tattoo.

As for the dumbasses in your business classes, at some point tattoo regret will set in. Hopefully they have enough money left over after school to invest in tattoo removal. It may not look so cool on the neck.

I would agree with the comments given so far.

Everyone has an initial judgment, as it is human nature... but most normal people wait until they interact with the person before passing off a final opinion on the person.

I make all my judgements on this site based on avatars. All the ones with Reds avatars are retarded, dimwitted giraffes.

thing is, i've committed to growing my hair out for locks of love (so my hair can be cut and a wig can be made for a cancer patient going through chemotherapy)..i'm at about 7 inches, i dont have too far to go. this person said it is okay to do that, but i still dont think he approves by his actions

When I have been in the business of hiring people, yes, looks were very important to me and therefore the business. I was very particular from the hair, clothing, tats (mostly placement/visibility), and even their fingernails (they had to be clean and cut, not gnawed on).

Personally, I look people over when upon introduction. Visuals are the first sense. And then I go from there.

Dirtyness (as in slovenly dirty) is definitely a 1 strike and your out.

Looks are apart of being the best, so yes I do judge them based on their appearance.

I absolutely would. A little less qualified I can live with. Potentially changing the image and culture of the office I cannot.

The "more qualified" is not a victim in your example. They are simply not the person that I want to hire over someone else who may be less qualified but has the image that will lend to our environment.

initially, yes--to me it's instinctive..but I definitely hold off any judgement until I've had the chance to interact with the person

Human nature dictates that we judge by appearance. Particularly in the area of employment. Sometimes you make determinations about people by the associations they keep. Sometimes we do it by whether the person is well groomed, etc. We also make decisions based on race, which is unfortunate and often inaccurate..not to mention totally illegal. First impressions are often the measuring stick we employ.

I was a manager of a business a little while ago, and I judged people by their looks, it's the first thing you notice about a person even before they open their mouth. If you come into a interview for a business that wears khaki's and polo's, and you're wearing a hoodie and jeans and unkempt hair...that's a negative strike obviously.

Yeah, I think everyone is aware that how they present themselves has an impact on how they do in interviews/the job itself. There's a reason there are seminars and such with titles like "What Not to Wear to Interviews and Job Fairs" at every college.

Your image matters and if you think that you might be discriminated against because of it...change your image. Unless your image (or in this case giving hair to Locks for Love) is more important to you than the job.

Depends on the position... If one is in front of the public/customers... Appearance is extremely important. The first impression a customer has of a company/business only happens once. Like it or not... it is very important.
