They are not formally counted until the convention anyways. But, they are a way to ensure a radical candidate does not overtake the party, like Bernie or even Trump.
Interesting enough, Five Thirty Eight did a story last month saying Trump would have been easy to stop under the D rules, as Super Delegates would have kept Bush or Rubio in the race.
