hasbeen: two things... I will never call someone a criminal if they want to bring a newborn to a midnight showing of a movie. (Stupidity is not a crime...yet.) However, if someone walks into a public facility and opens fire... CRIMINAL!!!!!!!!!!

Also, upon hearing this, I thought a few things, namely - white male, 28-35 years old, parents divorced when he was young, more than likely some type of sexual past, beit giver or receiver, who will have a neighbor that says, "He seemed so normal. A bit of a recluse but not crazy."

How close was I?

Let's try to keep the focus off politics and more on the tragedy. If you want to discuss politics, I bet there is a thread in the politics forum for it, or create one.

Crazy. Some friends of ours' sons were at the theater when it happened. The oldest caught shrapnel in the arm and had surgery, but will be fine. The younger one was unharmed. Scary shit!
Forest teen among those injured in Colorado shooting<dd style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; background-color: rgb(252, 252, 252); ">A recent Riverdale High School graduate was among the more than 50 injured in a Colorado shooting that left 12 dead this morning.

Gage Hankins, 18, of Forest, attended a midnight screening of &#8220;The Dark Knight Rises&#8221; in Aurora, Colo. today in a group with his brother, Jackson, 14, when a gunman entered the adjacent theater.

Crossfire from the shooting struck Gage Hankins in the arm. Though he lost some blood, doctors expect him to soon make a full recovery, said Gage&#8217;s father, Dave Hankins.

&#8220;Right now, he&#8217;s sitting up, eating, watching the national news,&#8221; he said.

The wound was about two inches long and Gage said it caused &#8220;excruciating pain,&#8221; Dave Hankins said.

Dave Hankins said he was not in attendance, but is very thankful his sons were not seriously injured. He said he&#8217;s praying for the families of those also affected.

Gage Hankins is a 2012 graduate of Riverdale High School.

He has ordered a full investigation by the federal government to make sure the person responsible for these crimes is caught and held accountable for his actions. The best part of his speech was when he was talking about the tragedy, people were yelling "4 more years", classiness at its best.
Grow up, he didn't say anything wrong there.

"We're going to stand by our neighbors in Colorado during this extraordinarily difficult time," he told the crowd. "Such violence, such evil is senseless; it's beyond reason."

"There are going to be other days for politics; this is a day for prayer and reflection,"

You probably disagree with that simply because of who said it.

The St. Paris' Fire Chief's (Champaign County) son and daughter were at the movie. The daughter was shot in the leg.

It's so odd that this many Ohio people would be in a theatre in Colorado.

I don't think there was crossfire...poor reporting there. He was hit with "shrapnel". I assume a bullet ricochet.

I can't imagine seeing this on the news knowing that your kids were there, or getting a call that they were there. :(

Only 1 victim has been identified (as far as I know). She was an aspiring sports reporter for a local TV station. She apparently narrowly missed a shooting at a mall in Canada earlier this year.

Her brother is updating the situation via his blog....it's hard to read.

We've had 20 years of mass murders throughout which I have repeatedly told CNN and our other media, if you dont want to propogate more mass muders, don't start the story with sirens blaring. Don't have pictures of the killer. Don't make this 24/7 coverage. Do everything you can not to make the body count the lead story. Do not try to make the killer some kind of anti-hero. Do localize the story to the affected community and make it as boring as possible in every other market. Every time we see intense saturation coverage, we expect more within a week.
reminds me of that tool song, vicarious. these situations are terrible, but the type of coverage seen across the country right now does nothing but make the situation worse.

its from a different instance of mass murder, but the point remains poingant.

Sounds like Gage was actually in the theatre next door and was hit by a bullet that came through the wall.
Dave Hankins told Hardin County radio station WKTN this morning that his son was in a theater next to the one where the bulk of the shooting took place, and that some bullets may have come through the wall.
Gage Hankins was hit in the right forearm and doctors removed shrapnel in his wrist, the radio station reported.

can't help but think that if someone in that theater had a CCW they might have been able to help. I'd rather go down shooting back than be gunned down running for the exits.

I'm an advocate for CCW and will be getting mine sometime this year. But I just don't think so in this case. Tear gas and then all breaks loose. Unless you were very close to the shooter and didn't get gassed, you likely wouldn't even know where the shots were coming from. And with that many people, your chances for hitting a bystander are pretty great.

Was the kid crying and interrupting the film? If so, 100% justified.
